Ally Disterhoft and the scoring record

Hawkeye fan Judzeehawk reported that at the last game they made an announcement about Ally and the record. Well for more than 35 years Cindy Haugejorde has held the career record of 2059 points scored. No one else has scored as much as 2000. Ally entered this year with 1542 points and has added 190 points giving her 1732 as of today. She needs 327 to reach 2059. Ally is averaging 17.3 ppg with 18 regular season games left. Some quick arithmetic shows that leaves her 16 points shy of the record. She needs to average 18.2 to make it before the Big Ten Tournament. Barring some unfortunate circumstance she seems to have an excellent chance to break the record. The competition heats up, but so will Iowa's dependence on Ally to lead the way with her scoring. Ally can move into the top 10 all time rebounders with 135 more rebounds (she currently averages 5.2 and would need to step that up to 7.5 or have a long run in the tournaments) Cindy and Tangela Smith are the only 2 currently in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding. Megan and Tania are already starting their assaults on some all time records and Kathleen Doyle has 24 steals and is on pace to break the single season mark for steals (inspite of not having nearly as much court time as the other starters). Good luck and good health to Ally - this team is developing into something special. Thanks to Judzeehawk for the heads uo.

I believe Ally can attain this record but she is not a shellfish player and that may keep her from the record. Ally is a total team player and will do whatever it takes for the team to win. Good luck to Ally on her quest for the record. It would be cool to see her reach it!

Thanks hagarwood the post!

Please explain yourself in detail.
Thanks for your kind words. As I learned a few days ago - don't feed the trolls that is what they want. I suspect Ally will get a few games in the Big Ten Tournament and an NCAA tourney run to get this record if she doesn't get it by the Wisconsin game on Feb. 26th. She could really explode against the Badgers.

With good health, and a few post season she will break the record for sure. Going from 18 to 22 games would mean that she only needs to average 15 points per game. This would be a huge achievement.

You're correct about the trolls. There's a couple teams Ally could really score some points against like Rutgers and Wisconsin. I hope Lisa gives her the opportunity for some big games.

Absolutely it would be a huge achievement. I would like to be there when it happens. Senior night would be a super night for it to happen.

OK I usually agree with you on most things, but Vivian is going to get Rutgers playing better and they will defend even if they are not that good. So I'm guessing from what I've seen the worst defenses in no particular order will be - Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Northwestern - maybe tOSU (Ihaven't seen much of them though). Ally can go off whenever she pleases, I just doubt it'll be against a C. Vivian Stringer team.

I watched Rutgers play this evening against seton hall. Rutgers is very short handed. 3 of their best players won't be playing this year. C. Vivian has got her work cut out for this year. The've got a couple bigs they play at the same time that are not up to her standard yet. Will I think they'll improve? Maybe a little. They are big but slow and awkward. Hope they stay that way until we've played them twice. Rutgers perimeter shooting has to be very good for them to succeed against the better teams.

Lest we not forget, this future all-time leading scorer had to sweat out an Iowa offer for quite a while. Iowa State was months ahead of them, and Iowa initially had concerns about Ally's athleticism and her reluctance to "take over" high school games from a scoring standpoint. Luckily they came around, but that could have been an all-time miss.

She sure had some good teams at Iowa. Here is one of them. Here is a good one.

Thanks for posting. I've only seen the first half and will finish it. Hard to believe that was almost 25 years ago. C. Vivian looked so young. I always have liked her and hated to see her leave. She got quite an ovation last year when Rutgers came to Iowa.

Just curious where you got that information. It certainly is contradicted by what Ally and her parents have said as reported by the Press Citizen and Cedar Rapids Gazette. Perhaps you could share your sources.

Two observations.... First, I had forgotten about the women's/girl's uniforms that had the ribbed-bottom jerseys to match the ribbed-bottom shorts. Yikes.

Second, a Big Ten Women's basketball game with a 2 person officiating crew!!! All high games now have a 3 person crew.

I was around West High a bit when Ally was playing, and I overheard some frustrations voiced when ISU had offered but Iowa was still waiting (I think ISU was before her junior year, and Iowa offered after her junior season). Ultimately Iowa was her dream school (she was on the team's poster as a little girl for heaven's sake), and her mom has a great relationship with the coaching staff. When Iowa did come around, all that frustration was water under the bridge because of the type of people involved (both Ally and her parents, as well as the Iowa staff). I just think it is funny to consider some of that initial hesitation, and then to see how Ally has produced.
