My wife asked me last week after the loss if I was going to be in a bad mood all week. I honestly answered, this game really only mattered with respect to BCS and polls. If the Hawks win out they are still Big Ten Champs.

What the game did do is take away any margin for success. One loss and the season is a dissapointment, win them all and it is a great season.

Well instead of controlling our own destiny and trip to the Rose bowl, this just makes us dependent on a Wisky loss for the Rose (and winning out of course) so there is that. We can still be B10 champs and not go to the Rose bowl...again.

Yes, but that is what I meant by BCS. Goal number one for me is the B10 Championship. If the Hawks are B10 Champs, they had a great season. Remember, last year they won the Orange Bowl and weren't B10 Champs.

I'm with ya, I'm just saying that to win a 3rd B10 title under KF and never be to the Rose kind of sucks. Not saying I wouldn't take it, cause I would in a heart beat, but just saying. here's hoping for a win on Saturday and going from there.

If the team doesn't win on Saturday it is 2005 all over again - only, in my mind, worse.

^^^This.^^^

Win and there is still hope for a great season.

Lose.....we are probably looking at 7-5 or 8-4 and a MAJOR disappointment in the season.

Here's the real kicker statistic:

Rose Bowl Appearances - Ron Zook 1, Kirk Ferentz 0

Number of times blown out by USC - Ron Zook 1, Kirk Ferentz 1

Tell that to an Iowa State fan, or a Minnesota fan :) They'll probably just glare at you.

This year will do a ton to KF's coaching resume at this point IF AND ONLY IF we win out, and go to the BCS.

If you take his first two years out and start with the 2001 season, in the modern KF era of the past 10 years including this one. We will have won the conference 3 times, gone to 3 BCS games, and finished in the top 10 potentially 5 times, OR EVERY OTHER YEAR.

If we don't, than it is basically 2005 again, and maybe puts a different spin on KF's resume. That when the target is on his back instead of the other way around, they can't get it done.

It is not a great season unless we go to a BCS game.

A piece of a shared league title without a BCS bowl game is absolutely worthless.

So when we beat LSU in the Cap1 bowl and were #8 in the country that was worthless? Give me a break. It won't be what we wanted out of this year, but a 10-2 reg. season (we'd have to have this to tie for the title) would be pretty darn good. To lose the way we lost and share the B10 title will make us think what could have been, but it's not worthless that's for sure.

I disagree. In 2005, we got manhandled by Ohio State and we lost in embarrassing fashion against Iowa State.

In large part, in 2005, we lost due to attitude issues on the squad AND due to inexperience and/or injuries at key positions.

The nice thing about the 2010 squad is that I still think that the overall team attitude is much better than what it was back in 2005. However, not unlike the '05 squad, we've gotten stung some by injuries and/or inexperience.

One thing that I didn't like about the '05 team is that the team didn't take ownership of their losses. I heard Drew Tate say crap like "we beat ourselves" too much ... whereas we don't hear that sort of trash come from Stanzi.

A big benefit that the '05 team had is that the D managed to remain pretty healthy at most of the key spots. As I recall, Shada had to come in a bit in '05. Of course, Merrick was rather exploitable on pass D. However, at least the D didn't have to do a lot of personnel shuffling at the midpoint of the season.

In contrast, the 2010 Iowa D hasn't enjoyed nearly has good personnel continuity. That is definitely not a good thing. Furthermore, our special teams play has been the worst its been in years (for pretty obvious reasons).

I think if Iowa loses to MSU or OSU then the season is more like 2003 than 2005 where we lost games to ranked opponents and still had a good season.

How can people say winning the conference isn't something to be proud of? It was an amazing feeling being on the field after the 2004 Iowa v Wisconsin game. I didn't care that we weren't going to a BCS Bowl.

Also, okeefeforprez, that Illinois team had 3 losses. It was just luck that got them into the Rose Bowl.
