Hawkeyes Sweep Weekly Big Ten Awards - IOWA OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
IOWA CITY - University of Iowa junior Kachine Alexander and freshman Jaime Printy have both been honored by the Big Ten. Alexander was named the conference Player of the Week, while Printy earned Freshman of the Week honors.
Alexander put up big numbers in both of Iowa's Big Ten wins last week. She averaged 22.5 points and 11 rebounds in wins at Indiana and at home against Illinois. She shot .579 from the field and .875 from the free throw line.
The Minneapolis, MN, native collected her 11th double-double of the season Thursday at Indiana, scoring 21 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. She registered her double-double just 15:17 into the game, recording her 10th rebound at the 4:43 mark in the first half.
Alexander was once again clutch Sunday against Illinois. She netted a game-high 24 points, along with six rebounds and six assists. Alexander did most of her damage at the free throw line, setting school and Carver-Hawkeye Arena records for free throws made (17) and attempted (20). The 17 made free throws were also the most by a single player in a Big Ten game. She also wrestled away two important defensive rebounds in the final 1:30, with Iowa leading by five and seven points, respectively.
This is the second time this season, and the fourth time in her career, Alexander has been tabbed Big Ten Player of the Week. She was honored by the conference after the first week of the season.
Printy also averaged 22.5 points, along with 4.5 rebounds in Iowa's wins last week. She sparked Iowa against Indiana, scoring a career-high 28 points along with five rebounds. Printy led the Hawkeye charge in the second half, scoring 20 of her 28 points in the final 20 minutes. She scored 14-straight points for Iowa between the 10:41 and 4:05 mark in the half. With Iowa leading by just one point with 20 seconds left, Printy nailed a runner in the lane as the shot clock expired to put the Hawkeyes up three points.
The Marion, IA, native followed with 17 points, four rebounds two assists and three steals Sunday against Illinois. She had 11 of her 17 points in the first half, helping Iowa build a 47-20 halftime lead, its biggest halftime lead of the season. She went on another scoring streak in the first stanza, netting nine-straight points off three-consecutive triples between the 9:44 and 8:25 mark.
Printy has now been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week a conference-leading four times this season. As a team, the Hawkeyes have collected seven weekly honors this season, second only to Ohio State's eight awards.
