Alabama Game Notes/Article

First of all HUGE win for the Hawks!! A couple of my notes for the game

- We need to start faster. We didn't score before the first media timeout and our slow starts are an alarming trend (we got down 11-1)

- Alabama pressed us and I didn't think we did a sensational job but you can tell this team was prepared and rarely turned the ball over against it. Huge improvement from last year.

- The newcomers played fairly well. Basabe struggled but had a good block and is still leading the team in rebounds. Marble made some big shots and Cartwright looked much improved from yesterday. McCabe was clearly the Player of the game leading us in pts, rbs, and steals. He only had 1 TO and had some beautiful passes.

- We are 11 deep which is hard to believe. I remember 1 1/2 years ago we didn't have enough players to scrimmage 5 v 5. Our bench outscored Alabama 31-5 and outscored our starters 31-24.

- We penetrated and got to the line. 32 FTA's was phenomenal but we need to make more than 63% of them.

- Archie is a huge surprise. He played 8 solid minutes and looked better than Brommer. He will be seeing more time and had a newfound confidence.

- I was at times disappointed with May's playing but he had Iowa's first seven points to start the second half and really made some clutch plays at the right time. For May to get to the next "level" on this team he needs to continue to do the things we need, even on tough nights.

- Our defense again was very impressive. I like the 3/4 court trap

Here's the Des Moines register article. Best quote "We’re so much better than we were a week ago" - Fran McCaffery. Keep it up coach!!

I was happy for the kids, who will probably not taste victory very often this year. McCabe celebrated his birthday in a great way a day later.
Cartwright did settle down vs Bama as opposed to his wild ways vs Xavier...and could be our starting pg soon.
We continue to shoot the ball very poorly. If the Hawks expect to win many games vs BCS teams, must shoot better than average.
Long Beach St becomes a semi-big game...can they come back strong?
I had them beating SDSt.,but losing to Bama on my projections,so a win vs LBSt puts them back on track to win 13 games...which looks overly-optimistic but why not reach high?

Not sure the shooting will be consistently good....

ever this year. Just still lacking the roster to be good on a consistent basis. I really like how hard the team competed the last 12 minutes of the Xavier game and the whole 40 minutes against Alabama. Winning the battle for most of the loose balls, defending with some verve and purpose.

Coach seems to not care for pre-conceived notions, he is very willing to go with whatever is working in a game, whether it is personnel, types of defense, offense, whatever. If a guy is playing well, he'll let them get more minutes.

If this team continues to play hard for forty minutes, they will win some games that no one expects them to win. How many is the million dollar question.
