AJ Epenesa - B10 Defensive Player of Week Award

Well deserved. I watched the game again...Minnesota was really protecting their left tackle. They chipped AJ several times and just ran a TE at him to get in the way and stop him from getting off quickly. Very impressive performance...one of his best. Another thing I missed at the end of the game is that he actually got in Morgan's face on first down too. He got the big sack on second down, but he disrupted first down too. You want your best player to take over in big moments...that was pretty amazing...when it was all on the line.

On another note...Fox sucks. What was the deal with not playing replays? It looks like Morgan loses the ball a few times during the sack as our guys come up with it...but no replay. Awful.

Mel Kiper Names The “Biggest Riser” On His Draft Board

The 2019 college football season is nearing the end of the regular season. With the end of the college football season drawing near, NFL draft analysts and scouts are busy finding the next NFL greats.

After 12 weeks of action, ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper took to social media to reveal the “biggest riser” on his draft board.

It should come as no surprise, that Iowa defensive lineman A.J. Epenesa was Kiper’s pick. Epenesa is coming off of a truly dominant performance against Minnesota.

Here’s what Kiper had to say about the star defensive lineman:

“The biggest riser on my new Big Board for the 2020 NFL draft — coming next week — is likely to be Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa, who was a force against Minnesota with 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. After a slow start this season, the junior has four sacks in his last three games. At 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, Epenesa’s versatility stands out. He brought edge and inside pressure against the Gophers, and he could be used at defensive tackle in the NFL. The Hawkeyes play Illinois on Saturday.”

Epenesa was already on track to be a top-20 pick in the 2020 NFL draft, but it looks like he could be moving up.

Iowa finishes the season with Illinois and Nebraska, which should give Epenesa two more chances to shine.

I am glad the coaching staff finally starting moving him around at different positions on the line, after the read my post and suggestion a few weeks ago. He was getting worn out banging into triple teams, waiting for him each play.

I said it last year but I think more emphasis needs to be put into where players maybe going and how they fit it. Much of the NFL is the schemes they run and where you fit it. I hate to see guys leave early to get buried in the depth chart or flounder on a garbage team. Regardless of making the money in many Cases the money can be better if you stay and possibly get a better team. We will see what he decides

Stay out of the draft and NFL combine...sign with a team which is a good fit, and wants you.

You see the success Nick Bosa is having and you think you can get something similar from AJE, of course NFL scouts would be salivating.

while AJE is good I don’t see him as being close to Bosa at this stage. It will be tough for him to forgo the money and I wouldn’t blame him but depending on what he wants to do at Iowa in terms of a player and team goals I think he could gain a lot by staying.

Look at Chase Young, he is better than AJ. While AJ has an impact on the game he hasn’t single handed lay controlled a game like Young has numerous times including today against PSU.

looking at the defense coming back they are legit to be better than this year and I hope for my selfish reasons he wants to be a part of it

Gholston and Stone have me more worried because they are right there. They have probably maxed out everything at this level, but I am not sure if they are ready to make that NFL leap.
