After the hangover...

1. We had a pick six, they had a pick 6, we had a turnoever deep in our territory that led to a touchdown and so did they. Those 14 points cancel eachother out.

2. That makes the difference in the game the kickoff return, which was truly appalling.

3. Offense vs. Defense score with drives starting on the offenses side of the 50 was Iowa 14, Arizona 13.

4. If Mossbreaker makes that kick and the defense was playing with the lead, I'm not sure the outcome changes, but I'm not sure it doesn't either. The mentality changes.

5. Our defense played fairly well, but definitely defined bend but don't break. I'm not crazy about it, but you can't argue with the points they give up.

6. That being said, every Iowa fan should have felt like we were in control with all that momentum and our defense on the field. When it counted the most, they broke.

7. These things happen, it is heartbreaking to lose a game that you came back so strongly from, and that is what is most depressing.

8. Stanzi and the WR should have had a field day with all that blitzing. Stanzi threw some nice balls and not so nice balls, but by and large, there were touchdowns left on the field for Iowa had our receivers looked over a different shoulder or simply caught the ball.

9. The total abandonment of the running game was frustrating to watch. I suppose they were doing the right thing based on the level of effectiveness.

6. That being said, I was horrified by the number of deep balls we threw, even if guys were open and they simply weren't executed. If our only remedy for 8 in the box and blitzes is to heave the ball 35+ yards, we are in BIG BIG trouble.

6a. Our offensive line was horrendous by any standards on the final drive. That was the lone coaching failure. You can't let your guys get manhandled like that, and if they are, you need to have more players blocking.

7. I still think we play Ohio State for the Big 10 championship. And that ought to be good enough for everyone.

8. The difference between true frontline powers and Iowa is this. This is a once in a decade type team for Iowa. True national frontline powers have this team year in and year out which is why they win national championships. If it was simply being better on paper, you wouldn't have to play the games. Alabama has this level of team every year, so when they lose 2 games, the next year they are just as good. Same with Ohio State... that year may be shot, but their fans always know that there will be another year with the same level of talent. We don't have that at Iowa... these years only come around so often, and it is frustrating to see the dream end so early.

9. My hope is that Iowa reloads each year to be considered a frontline Big 10 power, that is always in contention for the conference year in and year out. Knowing how fragile a national championship hope filled season is, Big 10 championships are my goal.

10. I missed the meltdown last night, but the team showed a lot od heart to come back. That being said, I don't think anyone that saw the last two drives of the game could argue that Arizona simply wanted it more and played with more heart. I said before the year that we have the talent to beat anyone so long as we always play with the Iowa chip on our shoulder that we need to play with more heart and want it more. Last night at the end simply proved that to be the exact case. They wanted it more at the end...

Other than the mathematical errors, great post. When all is said and done, with all the mistakes that were made, the Hawks were in the game at the end. The lack of any screen passes against the obvious blitz on the final "drive" is still puzzling to me.

An excellent post BSpringsteen. I'd like to make a few comments on some of your listed items.

"1. We had a pick six, they had a pick 6, we had a turnoever deep in our territory that led to a touchdown and so did they. Those 14 points cancel eachother out."

Points in and points out you are correct that they cancel each other out. However, I think the time and situation of their 14 easy points had a bigger effect. We spotted them 14 early on the road. It forced us to get away a little bit from what we probably wanted to do offensively. It also fueled what was already a raucous atmosphere. But I see the point you're trying to make here. I've seen some ridiculous comments already today that we'd beat AZ 9 of 10 times and things of that nature. The fact that our miserable offense was also basically spotted 14 points throughout the second half seems to slip through the cracks.

"6. That being said, I was horrified by the number of deep balls we threw, even if guys were open and they simply weren't executed. If our only remedy for 8 in the box and blitzes is to heave the ball 35+ yards, we are in BIG BIG trouble.

I used to get horrified, but now I've kind of gotten use to this from KOK. We never have gotten the ball out quick on offense and we take a lot of sacks for it.

The deep balls concern me too. We don't put enough value on just moving the chains to get another set of fresh downs. I think the 2nd and 3 around mid-field with about 3 minutes left is a perfect example. NEVER EVER should we have taken a sack in that sitation. That comes with the play calling too. All you need is 3 yards, plenty of time left - why would you call a slow developing play? I would have liked to run in that situation 2 straight times and just gotten the 1st down. But instead, we don't even roll Stanzi out and give him the option to run for a 1st. We sit in the pocket for 3 seconds and take a sack. Then we do it 2 more times in a row and ball game.

I agree with this on all levels. Especially at Dline.

Brian - while I agree that their points created a different type of game right away, our points that we traded on the pick 6 and fumbled punt, also shifted momentum way in our favor in the 4th qtr. That evened it out for me in game situation also.
