It was merely a joke, but to me the article is kind of a case study into what kind of challenges Fran faces on the recruiting trail.
Remember the 8 or so PGs you listed that Fran supposedly whiffed on? As I tried to explain to you there was probably only a couple of them who had even really considered playing basketball in Iowa. You see a lot of kids not from Iowa or the Midwest dont know much about Iowa or think Iowa is the middle of nowhere.
Say for instance Tre Wood starts blowing up and recieving offers from a bunch of east coast teams he grew up watching. Iowa's recruitment of Tre may go cold if he is more interested in staying close to home. Fran will move along to the next player he thinks he can build a relationship with. Does that mean Fran screwed up by being aggressive and offering early? Not to me it doesn't.
The Iowa coaching staff is pretty relentless in their recruiting. Every year the team seems to get better and better with higher rated recruits. You can't ask for anything more than that. There is a big difference in the players that were considering Iowa when Fran first took over to the players considering Iowa now. Woodbury and Gesell were four star recruits, but they were also guys that lived in or close to Iowa.
