Adversity Strengthens Keagan Johnson's Resolve

I have no objective basis for making this statement, but I think the passing game is going to be appreciably more effective this season and a healthy KJ is a big part of that. He can stretch the defenses, but also can make tough catches over the middle. He played well last season as a true frosh, but had some dropsies, so there is room for him to be even better. With LaPorta underneath, and with an improved running attack, I see Petras developing into an average QB. That should be good enough given the defense I expect we will have. In general, I think we will be able to sustain more drives this season. We have nowhere to go but up!

If we don't use the talent we have at WR...KFz will deserve every bit of criticism he's gotten on that front. Lots of WR talent on this club.

Agreed on talent at the WR. But, at the risk of stating the obvious, the success of this team will come down to OL play. It was way too inconsistent last year. Petras can be an effective system QB, but he is not going to beat anyone off script. That means there has to be a consistent running attack, that can lead to play action, and keep Petras out of predictable passing situations. If the OL cannot generate a running attack, it won't matter how talented our receivers are because Petras will be on his back or checking down to no one on 3rd and 8 plays.

That's why it is important for Brian to keep teams guessing. Always pass on first down. Always run on second and 10 because no one will be expecting it. Always call a deep pass with a double move on 3rd and 8 because if our 6 blockers can stop their 7 rushers it will probably be a big play.

Wouldn't it be quite the 180 this yr if BF decided to have Petras take some shots down the field. Not just the occasional 1 a game type. But I mean several. Like if it didn't work on 1st down try again on 2nd. Zig when others are zagging. Literally nobody would be preparing for us to do anything like it. Teams have been loading up the box and keeping their safeties within 10 yards of the LOS on us all of last yr. Till we burn them not once not twice but several times teams haven't got a good reason to do anything different.

Granted we are who we are and I'm not saying take 15 shots 30 yards or more downfield but 5 or more would sure help. Call me crazy

Add to that the fact that our tackles will have another year of experience and we should be better on offense. Every team with decent or better edge rushers gave us problems last year.

I was curious what kind of adversity a guy that started as a true freshman could have. I didn't even realize or remember that he was hurt this spring..

Well, I have heard the old "Iowa could have it's best group of recievers ever" before. I remain skeptical.

I saw what the WR's could do last year. Petras is still the QB and BF is still the OC. Tracy and Jones are gone. I don't expect any dramatic improvement from our WR"s. I hope I am wrong.
