Admissions standards

Hey guys is there any credence to the much discussed issue of admissions to Iowa? I have read numerous blog entries that say that our entrance requirements are tougher than other schools. Is this why we struggle with recruiting more than some schools? I can't figure out why we can't get the big recruits.

Thanx

Its because the team is not good. They have not been any good for several years now. I doubt admission standards have much to do with it. I mean Northwestern is getting decent talent and so is Purdue, both schools have tougher admission standards than Iowa.
I do belive however, that admission standards are more stringent for out of state applicants than they are for in-state applicants.

Almost every team in the Big 10 is rated high academically than Iowa. Wisconsin and Illinois are both top 25 rated schools, and they can field ranked teams.

Whining about academics is a pathetic excuse. I mean bottom of the gutter bs. Someone post that Reggie Evans interview again to highlight Iowa's stringent academic requirements.

I think it is a poor excuse, the fact is Iowa had a poor coach for three years that couldn't keep players in school. Academics isn't the issue, just sounds good for people that can't admit reality.

It's harder to convince 18 year-olds to come live in Iowa for 4-5 years than many Iowa fans want to admit. Admissions standards are a non-issue for Iowa when addressing recruiting.

That's why you need an exceptional coach who can develop talent better than most coaches (Mr. Davis, Ferentz, Fry) or an exceptional recruiter (Raveling, hopefully Fran) to coach here if you want competitive football and basketball programs, and be willing to pay enough to keep them from leaving when they do succeed.

Bottom line.

Kansas and all the sudden, Kansas St. has no problem attracting talent. Again, Kansas ST. in Manhattan, KS of all places. Also, look at Minnesota and some of the highly recruited kids they get. Iowa use to get it's fair share of talent, but we are now seeing the results of the end of the Alford era and Lickliters entire era reaching into the Fran era. Much like a good season and an Orange Bowl win, you won't see the results on the recruiting front until 2 years later more than likely. Fran needs to upgrade the talent big time. Basabe is a great start, but until some of the others move on and are replaced with better skilled players, Iowa will continue to struggle.

We can't get recruits because we suck so bad. Would you want to play for them? In the cellar of the B10 and not coming out in the foreseeable future. Fran is going to have to perform some magic to turn this turd around.

Dude, they have the Mall of America...:D
In all seriousness, they still have a better talent base to choose from overall, in their home state. Tubby Smith being Nationally known, doesn't hurt.

Couldn't agree more.

Kansas = One of the top 2 or 3 'Elite Name' basketball programs in college history ensures even an average recruiter will have talent on hand

Minnesota = a 'name' coach with a National Championship ring and Minneapolis close by goes a long way

K-State = a couple of Bob Huggins recruiting classes has helped recently, but overall they have been to March Madness just 11 times since 1979.

True about Minnesota and Kansas, however, Kansas St. seems to still be pulling in highly recruited kids. My point was however, that I don't buy the weather being that big of a factor. Mr. Davis Davis was able to pull in very good talent all the time. Murray, Woolridge, Kingsbury, Earl, Ray Thompson, etc...It has more to do with Iowa being terrible under Lickliter.

Lets see how long K-State maintains that, not sure they can, the Beasley effect is still in place, but if they continue to struggle this season, it may not last long.

Yeah I am not sure about K-State.......... Wonder if Frank Martin can keep it going, but they seem to have some player issues this year.

Really an athlete really only needs at least an 18 on their ACT and all the minimum high school courses completed to be admitted to school. It is then up to the school to decide if they want to let a player in. Trust me if the player is good and they meet the ACT score and have all the proper HS classes they will get into any institution at most schools. Most schools have someone in the admission office looking out for athletics.

It is about the dumbest crap I see posted on this board. People must be complete idiots to think Iowa is difficult to get into.

It will be interesting to see if Martin can maintain K-State's recent success, and if he can, whether he decides to stick around or jump to a more prestigious program. I know they have had some nice classes in recent years but as of right now ESPN has the three 2011 K-State commits each graded at just 3 stars and Iowa with 2 commits also rated at 3 stars. Of course that could change drastically by signing day so who knows.

Iowa has lost out on guys because of the NCAA clearly house. Pretty sure if the NCAA clears them Iowa will take them if they can ball.

Duke doesn't have trouble recruiting players. Duke's admissions standards must be much lower than Iowa's. Boy, Cornell made the sweet sixteen last year. Their admissions standards must be super easy.

High admission standards does not equate to crappy baskeball. It's a lame excuse.
