A very good, timely, well-researched article with humor.

I think the NCAA should mandate NO punting in these exhibition games. How fun would that be?

You are backed up on your one yard line with 4th and 25? You better have something in your playbook cuz Rastetter didn't make the trip. Unless of course he is there as Nate's backup. :p

Great article. Rock fights are Kirk's favorite type of game. Seriously that PSU game in 2004 is next level. 40 carries for 42 rushing yards! You would have a hard time finding a team that accumulated those kind of numbers in games prior to passing being allowed.

That Ohio St game in 2003 is probably one of my favorite defensives performances from the Hawkeyes. They beat up a physical team.

That 2003 team is one of my all-time favorites. Kirk maxed out that season. Offense was decimated by injuries and they still won 10 games against a tough schedule. The toughest Hawkeye team I've ever seen. I truly believe teams where scared to play Iowa that season. And the rumored halftime speech at Wisconsin by Gallery & Sanders (I admit, I have some doubts of its validity) is fantastic even if its just a story.

03 OSU game?
or
04?

Ohio St game in 2004 was awesome. Of course they got the blowout win that season but 2003 team has my ultimate respect. As I said, they maxed out. How could any fan ask more than that? Ohio St was very talented and ended the year 11-2 and #4 in the nation. Iowa just beat them up but didn't have the offense to win the game.

Brown, Hinkel, and Lewis were hurt basically all year and even when they played they weren't close to 100%. Soloman was in JC that year so Ochoa was Iowa's top WR and Freddy was the only legit RB. Sanders even missed some time early in the year.

Really the only game that we saw the Hawkeyes at full strength or close to it was the Outback Bowl against Florida and we all know how that turned out. I've said this before and I'll say until my grave, the 2003 team is the most underrated team I've ever seen at Iowa and they ended up #10 in the nation. At full strength they were as good as any Iowa team I've seen.

No doubt any season where we end up crushing an SEC team and finishing top 10 is in the fan record books. And yes, that particular season is where the legend of KF was cemented as an elite coach. Speaking for myself I assumed those type of seasons would become - if not common-place - at least a regular occurrence. And of course the 2004 season where Iowa performed miracles without any running game what-so-ever made it clear Iowa had it's own Paterno. I think that period in Hawkeye lore was obviously a blessing and a curse. We saw what great coaching looked like, then we saw it fade away only to be resurrected whenever the seat became warm.:(
