How about when you go to the forum's home page here, you click on the "What's New" link? That's what I do. It only shows the most recent activity and even separates threads that haven't changed since your last visit.

After the question at first, I find it amazing how 1 guy/gal can carry on a conversation with 3 or 4 of his/her forum alter egos (or split personalities?!?!?!?!?)
