A Memory of Chris Street and scalping a ticket I’ll never forget

I have no experience of really knowing or interacting with Chris Street but I did attend and watch his last game at Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham.

Duke was coming off back to back national championships and my hate for Duke and Coach K had just begun.

I went out to scalp a ticket since none of my “Duke friends†could get me a ticket. It was a cold and drab cloudy January Saturday and got to Cameron Indoor Stadium ( this place holds less than 10,000 people but is incredibly loud) about a good hour or 2 before game time. I stood out in front of the main, “wrong†entrance and acted like I knew what I was doing. Even got responses form Grant Hill (with Chip Munk cheeks) and Bobby Hurley (with backwards ball cap) as they sauntered in when I asked if they had an extra ticket for sale.

Bobby Hurley “blew†Chris a god bye kiss at the game’s end because “he hated playing the Big Ten†and it was a well fought game. He later publicly apologized in the local newspaper (remember them?) for his actions.

NO luck at all getting a ticket but as I walked away I kept asking to buy a ticket… and scored one at the last minute from a DUKE fan.. face value $19-$25? for $20 bucks cash.

I cheered my *** off all game long, the Hawks were competitive but the game was never really that close. I saw Chris complete every free throw for the Iowa record… Even the soft *** Dukies around me appreciated my enthusiasm and that I was an IOWAN and a HAWKEYE.

Couldn’t believe the phone call later that week on Thursday night from my brother about his death. Didn’t sleep much that night and in the early years of sports talk radio I even listened to WFAN out of New York in the wee hours on the up-dates that Chris Street from IOWA had been killed in a horrible snow plow/car accident.

Any stories, anecdotes, interactions and memories would be great to hear.

Chris Street #40 RIP
