A lot of "glue"-guys in the 2011 recruiting class

It's probably a characteristic that is typical among Iowa's most productive recruiting classes ... and that characteristic is "versatility." I call guys who versatilely project at multiple positions as "glue"-guys. Such FOOTBALL PLAYERS provide the team with much needed "glue" that helps the team fit together all the better. Furthermore, such guys also help to versatilely fill holes in the depth chart too.

Anyhow, here are a list of positions and the current recruits who could project pretty well at them:

LB-types: Krieger-Coble, Duzey

TE-types: Hamilton, Krieger-Coble, Duzey, McMinn (if he has hands), Raymon (if he has hands)

OL-types: Blythe, Raymon (assuming he has the frame), McMinn (assuming he has the frame)

DL-types: Raymon, McMinn, Hamilton (if he has great explosiveness from the LOS), Blythe (strictly at DT)

WR-types: Grant, Shepherd, Vincent

DB-types: Shepherd, Vincent

QB-type: Rudock

I love the premise of this thread. But I think some of these guys are what they are. Blythe is probably going to be an interior lineman. If Sheppard stays he will probably be a wide out. McMinn is probably a DE. Alot depends on who else rounds out the class and how the previous class develops. I would like to see more pure Safeties commit to this class.

The safety position is an interesting one for Iowa. You would expect with the success Iowa has had with putting safeties in the league that we could recruit stronger at the position.

That being said, we have lost a few guys due to attrition that were tabbed at that spot.

It behooves us to have glue guys.

Did you get that straight from the horse's mouth?

I wonder why we aren't looked at harder by top tier high school safeties as well. You would think they would see Sanders, Considine and Godfrey in the NFL and might even read Bowen on NFP who does a pretty nice job of working Iowa into his articles.

I agree that many of the guys will likely end up where they were originally projected (or where they initially get a shot). However, it's nice that the guys are so versatile ... it gives the squad a little bit more liquidity personnel-wise with regard to filling voids as they arise.

As for the difficulty that Iowa seems to have recruiting top tier safeties ... I agree. It's beyond me why more guys haven't jumped on our bandwagon in that regard.

However, by how the coaches are recruiting at safety this year ... it doesn't necessarily appear that they're going after many top-tier guys in this class.

I think there are a bunch of guys that could make a solid contribution as freshman or most likely as RS freshman on special teams. Some of these kids have a ways to grow but I could see some of this athletic talent make a difference on special teams after their red shirt year.

I've always wondered about the recruiting for the safety position... It seems to me that most of the HS Safeties are typically RB's or undersized LB's (for HS) with lots of speed to stop the home run play. These guys tend to be undersized and shouldn't play at the D-1 level safety position. Whereas in the LB position (at the HS level) you find pretty good athletes that are undersized for the D-1 LB position that fit the D-1 safety position... so makes me wonder if the coaches tend to recruit the HS LB position with the safety position in mind.

Hey Homer, what are the odds of getting kirby now that osu is out

The odds are a lot better. I think that folks underestimate how much press coverage Iowa has been playing lately. I think that the development of guys like Godfrey, Fletcher, and Spievey will be paying the Hawks some dividends. Will it help us land Kirby? I don't know ... but it certainly helps our chances.

I think that Iowa will get a long look. Furthermore, if he lands at an out-of-state school ... I think that Iowa's chances increase even more!

Furthermore, I anticipate that some of the other guys out east, like Grant and Raymon will likely "work on" trying to convince Kirby to choose Iowa too. We'll see ....

According to Gateways coach OSU isn't out for Kirby at all, OSU and Kirby have agreed to talk again in the fall. Kirby is interested in taking an official to OSU if there is a spot for him. If Jabari Gorman opts for OSU then the Kirby chase would be officially over.

I think Safety is one spot where this staff really just goes after "Football Players" regardless of ratings. I don't think we will ever see a big influx of top tier guys nor will we seemuch of a drop off in NFL talent.
