A Little Perspective

Minnesota scored 95 points last night. In their 3 previous games they averaged half that total (47.7 PPG).

Minnesota shot 61.2% from the floor. Their season average is 16.6% less than that (44.6%).

Minnesota shot 57.9% from 3 point range. Their season average is 23% less than that (34.9%).

Minnesota shot 82.8% from the free throw line. Their season average is 8.2% less than that (74.6%).

They scored 23 points over their season average.

Iowa took this once in a season offensive barrage and was down 3 with less than a minute left.

Quit melting down.

But our defense and Twitter and Fran and..........This is meant to be satire.

Not a bad loss. Look at the parody in the BIG 10 this year. Iowa is not the only victim to losing on the road or at home to a perceived "poor team" (see Nebraska over MSU).

It is the FIRST loss to a team outside of the top 25.

We were an NIT team last season with essentially the same team and peeps are melting down because they expected B1G champs and 1 seeds. It's beyond ridiculous at this point. Am I disappointed? Sure, but if you take a step back and look at things with some perspective, Iowa is pretty much right on track as a program that started where Fran took it over. Good not great, tourney caliber, but probably not final four caliber. Seriously, I'm not sure what people expect or expected, but people melting down are Looney Tunes.

I have to admit I did not see a minute of the game last night so I could be way off base here. However, judging from what I've watched this season, I'm going to guess Minnesota's offensive outburst was aided by a number of wide open 3 point attempts and UM guards driving to the hoop easily, particularly late in the shot clock?

Certainly Minnesota deserves a ton of credit, they made the shots at a great clip according to your post and I saw the score so there is little doubt they had their offense going last night. But when you don't guard the 3 point line and give up drives to the hoop, many teams can score like that.

Although the stats are true, it seems like Iowa is the career night/day game teams want to play against right now. Mentally Fragile Iowa is just what the doctor ordered.

Funny how teams always seem to come out of their slumps shooting the 3 ball against Iowa, isn't it?

They're fragile. They're soft. They're just not good enough. They can't win the close ones. They don't have a go to guy. They miss free throws. They're distracted. They are gonna be on the bubble.... Seriously, STFU already.... they are better then anything we've had in close to a decade, if you're a Hawk fan, enjoy it.

I think this is the set up for Windsor** to remind us all how Michigan limped into the dance last year and made it to the title game. In case you missed it ...
-- they were 5-5 in last 10 regular season games, including a loss at lowly Penn State;
-- a decent Wisky team beat them in the quarters of the BTT (after Michigan didn't have a 1st round bye, either);
-- THEY MADE IT TO THE TITLE GAME!

Like '12-'13 Michigan, Iowa is also likely to finish 5-5 down the stretch, have to play Thursday in the BTT and will probably get bounced on Friday. However, unlike Michigan, Iowa beat Penn State on it's own floor and its "bad" loss was at least against a legit team playing for it's bubble life, not a B10 cellar-dweller.

Transitive rationalization: because Iowa's "bads" are slightly better than the standard bearer -- last year's Michigan's "bads", not only will Iowa make the NCAA title game, don't be surprised if they win the whole damn thing.:cool:

** Still trying to determine if I'm on Windsor's ignore list. This will either get his attention or be lost in the wind.;)

Better defense would have helped but we could play that exact same game 30 times before they wouldn't make enough of those shots to beat us again.

Players have been getting their career highs against Iowa for as long as I can remember. 2 players in one game is pretty impressive though.

I am still trying to figure out how we lose and why we believe our defense was so bad when MN was held without a field goal for the final 8 minutes of the game.

You look at the shooting percentages posted above and still have to try and figure out how we lost?

Its not that hard, doc.

On the road at Minny is not a bad loss.

It will be considered a bad loss by the casual NCAA fan. And it will be considered a really bad loss by the serious fan who is paying attention to what is going on with the team right now.

IMO, it was a combination of Minnesota being white hot and us playing lazy defense. When were in the zone, guys didn't have their hands up in their faces or in the passing lanes, and we weren't closing out on shooters very well either. It seemed like the Goophers were able to get to the rim at will last night as well. Our lack of playing tough defense, especially at this point in the season, is very concerning to me. We play best when our defense is taking control, and that hasn't been happening. I hope Fran stresses defensive intensity over these next few weeks, because it just hasn't been there lately for some reason.

Of course I'm going to support this team no matter what, but damn is it frustrating.
