A little perspective on recruiting rankings / hype

What is your point?
The point is that many of the ex-Hawkeyes in the NFL were not highly thought of coming out of high school..........and many of the top recruits didn't really go anywhere. It is in response to the frustration with us losing out on many of the big names late in the recruiting process......just a historical comparison for some perspective. No need to get your nose outta joint.

This comes up everytime a highly touted recruit goes somewhere else. Iowa has to do more with less highly ranked players we know. We all know the stars don't mean much, but I'd still love to have a roster of 5 and 4 stars. No they don't all pan out, but a lot of the 2 and 3 stars don't either. I'm not saying that stars matter, but do we have to have this topic brought up everytime a 5 star player doesn't come to Iowa?

No matter when its brought up, it shows how well this staff is at identifying raw talent and then developing and coaching that talent up

I didn't realize how highly touted Hunter was coming out of high school. #39 overall prospect. The #1 LB recruit according to ESPN this year is rated an 85. Same rating given to Hunter.

To be fair some our recent highly touted recruits were Clayborn, Ballard, Hunter, Bulaga, Bernstine, Nielson, Wegher, Davis, and Morrow. Pretty good success rate there.

Of those, only Morrow seemed to lack physical talent to some extent. Bernstine is physically talented but has injuries and possibly some focus issues. Wegher had personal problems but was talented, and Davis will have his day to show what he can do.

Who cares if they're going to the NFL? Are they competing for championships?

I know Jon. I think that is great, but I would also say that the staff would probably love to have the talent coming in each year that they can just further develop instead of fully develop from the RAW.

the higher rated guys turn out much more often then they don't. Our staff has shown a great propensity for developing talent. They've also shown a great propensity for getting 2nd in the race for highly rated prospects. Our talent development better not slip as it far outdistances our ability to recruit & game manage.

You have to remember that for Iowa to be mentioned 2nd most of the time for these "highly touted recruits", means a lot. Look back ten years ago and you wouldn't even see those guy considering Iowa. The nation is noticing the hard work and great coaching at Iowa and I have to think that if this continues in the next few years you will start seeing more "4-5 Star" guys committing to Iowa.

"If you aint first you're last"

As anyone will tell you, finishing second is the same as not even being considered.

Now imagine Iowa's coaches with 4/5* instead of 2/3. The difference between OSU and Iowa is they can play the worst game of the season and based on talent alone can sneak out a win. If Iowa plays the worst game of the year, they lose(Minn.). Yes most of the ex hawks were not highly touted, but I want Iowa to get highly touted players to help elevate them to the next level.

We dont need those highly touted players. And what do you mean get to the next level? There is no next level we are at the top of the sports world right now and you cant get any higher. Who cares about championships, we dont need no stinkin championships, cause we send players to the NFL.

Ok, sunshine. Your attempts at sarcasm are weak and based on something that you assumed I was saying - which I was not. The NFL reference was an indication of talent, just as recruiting rankings, are a perceived quantification of talent. I want championships - period. I want to be playing for the Big Ten title every year. If the coaching staff can recruit less talented (on paper) players because they have other intangibles then by all means do it. This is my point ....schools, like Iowa, who do well without Ohio State recruiting numbers clearly must be doing this to compete. I simply found it interesting that many of our top players were not ranked real high coming out. I want to get the big names, but it is a non exact science. If you want to be the bitter message board guy that's your business, but direct it elsewhere.

I think a lot of the 4/5 stars are close to physical finished products when they enter college. They need refining, maturing, etc. but if a tackle comes in at 320 at Iowa he isn't going to get much bigger- he may become stronger and more explosive but a lot of these guys are just physically superior to their peers at 18 years old. Iowa would be a good place for these guys to become football players and most would be likely to see significant PT at Iowa sooner. However most of them probably think they will come in and start wherever.

That said, Iowa is doing a nice job of recruiting Illinios, Michigan, Florida and Texas, and usually do well in Ohio. That is a great base to build a team off of. Iowa's reputation for developing players is well deserved and the recruiting of the last three seasons plus seems to be really improving as far as the eye test goes.
