A few random observations on game and arena experience from Tuesday

I don't start threads often but just a few thoughts I had after attending the game Tuesday night. Through the 433 threads about the game I didn't see a few of these mentioned, I apologize if it is redundant as I tried my best to read through many posts about the game.

1. Aaron White only had 4 Field Goal attempts the entire game! I know Aaron isn't Stauskas, as far as creating his own shot, but 4 is just way to low. I am not a basketball coach, so maybe someone that is can explain why we can't call some set plays or isolation for him? I really feel like Fran needs to run some plays for him, is this possible? Just confused by this.

2. Anyone else think we struggle with entry passes to the post? Guys will get good position on the block and we either hesitate to throw it in, resulting in a tip, steal or allow defender to recover etc., or we just don't get it to them period. We could also get better passing on the pick and roll, our screener will be open sometimes on the roll cutting to the basket and we fail to get them the ball. I would just like to see us get our bigs the ball when they are in a good position to score or be fouled trying to score.

3. This probably is redundant... but Tom Izzo can flat out coach. Hate him if you want, but he had a great game plan and his team doesn't waiver from it. Taking Iowa out of transition is the way to beat them and they did that, controlling the tempo all game long. His team was tough mentally and physically as always. He uses timeouts well too.

4. I know we have some referee experts on this board, what is "palming" the basketball anymore? I think Appling carries/palms the ball all the time and never gets called for it. Would like to know the definition of the rule.

5. Game atmosphere was very good, especially in second half crowd got in to it. I do think the in game stats on the scoreboard stink though. After being at Hilton for the game this year, I noticed they had some really great stats on a board such as free throw attempts/makes for each team. These stats would have been great to be able to see while at the game Tuesday night. All the scoreboards and stats kind of suck really. And of course my smartphone wouldn't get a signal in there to look them up online. Why on earth do we not have WiFi in the arena yet?
The black and gold striping looked pretty good, but what stood out to me was some of the sections that were the worst as far as random colors in their section were the midcourt seats. Seriously? These are all the season ticket holders that I know get the memos and they were the ones that couldn't figure out if they were black and gold so they wear white/teal/pink/lime...you name it I saw it in the midcourt seats. What also cracks me up is why on earth all the blue hairs in these seats all wear that pastel yellow color for their Hawk gear? Pastel Yellow is not gold...ditch the old pastel yellow sweaters people and get with the program.

Had to get these random thoughts off my chest and move on to Illinois, now I feel better fire away.

Aaron White's strength is transition offense. Michigan State either got back in transition or they fouled him meaning his opportunities for registering a FG attempt were limited (he made 8 free throws which pretty much means he shot the ball 4 more times.) He may have drawn more fouls that didn't send him to the line too (don't really remember.)

FG attempts and percentage don't really tell much of the game's story when the team is shooting 40 free throws in the game.

Makes sense, I just thought he could have taken #0 off the dribble all day had we got him the ball up top, cleared out and let him go to the hoop. Most likely he'd have drew a foul at least.

1 - Teammates are missing him in transition. The lob for the dunk is there once or twice most games and there is a bad pass or the ball handler just doesn't see him. He (and some of our other big guys) aren't getting the ball when they post up...limiting opportunities.

2 - Yes, I do think we struggle with the entry passes at times. I also think our front court guys don't always maintain a solid post up position. The entry pass is then tipped or stolen or never made.

3 - He can coach. He also knows he can push the envelope because of his longevity, credibility and reputation.

4 - The ball is palmed several times on every possession IMO. There is a token call every now and then but not very often.

Watching on TV, you could tell the crowd really was waiting for anything--ANYTHING--to blow the roof of Carver. However, the game was objectively boring, but for end of game drama.

Crowd was definitely waiting to explode. I kept expecting just one Whitey break away dunk and it just never happened.

I feel bad for Gatens. He grows up a Hawkeye fan and when he finally gets to play for them the arena is empty and they suck. 2 years later every big 10 game is sold out. Bad timing for him.

I have also noticed the displayed stats. What's the point of seeing how many rebounds you have if you don't know how many the opponent has to compare to?

As for Whitey not getting more shots. It's a combination of getting fouled allot, bad interior passing (he was open on the post up allot), and him not getting involved for long portions of the game.

The folks at the University of Iowa are unaware there's such a thing as the internet. Scores from around the B1G? Top 25? Not at Carver. Stats other than scoring? Not at Carver. They could be running some tweets for crying out loud. Stuck in the past....and I'm not talking about the team.
