So this is a day late and I only saw Marble's team vs Basabe's team but here it goes:
Marble: (30 points)
Imo Marble was the player of the game. He had 17 in the first half and the first 11 points in the game were either from Marble or Basabe. For a while in the second Marble did get a little quieter and the opponents had finally put someone (Basabe) on him. Before his height advantage over Price and Murphy was too much. He continued to impress me with his ball handling and his defense as well. Tonight his shot looked better. His frame will allow him to become a Kelly type of defender (6'5-6'6 good quick lateral movement).
Cougill: (18 points, 12 Rebounds)
I always get the idea half the people think he should never play and half think he could be a really solid contributor. Honestly I think it's in between both of those perspectives. He has some nice things about him: good hands, he looks for the outlet pass immediately, had some nice shots, and some really good putbacks. One time Basabe pulled Cougill out to the perimeter and tried to drive on him and Cougill deflected the ball out-of-bounds on Basabe (then on two consecutive possessions scored against Basabe). At the same time Cougill does not seem to have good awareness and Murphy would steal a rebound from him and at times Cougill could not finish. I didn't think Cougill got quite as exhausted this week but he obviously is not fast/quick. It's hard to know how worn out he is from his training too. I've only seen a little bit of Brommer this summer but I would agree with Dochtormen that the Center spot will be Cole/Brommer/Cougill but I have bigger worries than Cougill's play on this team. (Also of note he tweaked an ankle but eventually got up and limped a little in the second half but didn't seem to have a big impact on his game).
Basabe: (29 points, 10 rbs)
Still clearly the most athletic player but I have a feeling he is going to be somewhat frustrating to watch. He forces things A LOT and I realize it's PTL but I don't think that will completely disappear from his game --he will also get better with experience. He has some problems holding onto the ball and will fumble passes/rebounds. He had a lot of questionable defense but I thought he did ok on Marble. There were obviously times when the opponents were afraid to drive on him because of his athleticism and he also deflected some balls in transition. He is very explosive when he jumps not only getting up, but getting up quickly. Again the second half he started to have better post moves. He has the quick spin move that nobody could defend and had several dunks and also got to the free throw line a lot. It will be interesting to see if this move works in the Big Ten. While his jump shot is goofy it was decently effective. I would be shocked if he didn't start at PF from day one.
Andre Murphy:
Malcolm Moore did not play this week but Andre Murphy was very exciting to see. He went head-to-head with UNI's Anthony James. There is no doubt in my mind that Murphy should both get a walk-on offer and could see playing time. The guy is very scrappy and unbelievably quick with the ball. Pretty good defender except he gives up so much height. Should be a fan favorite.
