50 Years after the Black boycott

Ray Nagel was the coach back in 69-70. Troubled times with not only racial issues but Vietnam. Iowa football hadn't been good since Evy left his coaching position to become athletic director. Nagel looked to be the kind of coach who might have the ability to bring Iowa back but he lost the support of his team which turned into a boycott and eventually cost him and Evy their jobs as well as create chaos when we already had enough. The 60s were extremely volatile and ugly as racial discrimination was so obvious and the war so controversial I was a freshmen at Iowa in 69-70

I really thought we had come a long way since then and in many ways clearly it is better, however it is just so disappointing to hear all these players with so many concerns. I frankly have not been a Doyle fan since the Rabno (SP) fiasco but i guess I thought he was an over zealous coach that was equally that way to all players. but apparently it was more than that.

I have always been a Ferentz fan and thought he offered class to the program but if this all proves out to be true to the level players are asserting then he takes a big hit with me.. He had to know

Nagel had good teams, not great, the two years before the boycott, they two years with Podolak and Larry Lawrence and some other pretty good players. The boycott team was supposed to be one which might finally get a winning record.

What makes it seem like we as a people and country have come a long way since the later 1960's is that the racism is more hidden, more tucked away. I the 60s racism wasnt hidden at all all over the US. Racist whites could bad mouth a lot of people of color and no one said a word and most whites agreed with them to a degree.

But the racism is still here but I think and hope that it is less percentage of the populace so not so overt.

I never knew this happened. Amazing that 50 years later we have similar issues. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thanks for posting this. I am going to research this.

The more subtle approach to racism in the modern era is the concerted effort to perpetuate the negative economic impact on people of color. The power structure has been very successful.

Come on Sam and PC. The identity of the two parties back in time means little or nothing. Maybe you should take a hard look at what has happened in the last 3+ years. There is probably a reason why the Dems are energized by the re-emergence of loud cries against racism.

I agree with their identities then don't mean much now. I just found it interesting. What's happening now is one party thinks it's a good idea to give them just enough to stay afloat and not get ahead while the other party tries to give them the means to help themselves. One way keeps them oppressed and keeps them voting for you because you are giving them stuff. The other way gives them a chance at a successful life where they help themselves instead of waiting for handouts.

Edit. To not make it political, instead of saying Democrats and Republicans, I should have just said there are two ways of helping someone.

I honestly do not think the Dems as a political party are in favor of simply giving. I am uncertain about what specifically you mean by the other way. Would like to have it articulated as policy. I have not seen a repub plan either. As a Dem in general terms, I am not in favor of handouts. In fact most all of the people I talk politics with who lean left don’t either. It is vague, I will admit, but better access for minorities to education and employment is key. I am not smart enough to know how we do that.

For once Huck we can agree. The race card is the only card they have left. Before the COVID shutdowns the economy was humming and black and hispanic unemployment was at an all time low. Russia/Russia/Russia did not work and is coming back to bite them. They now see the economy bouncing back strong after the COVID shutdowns. Meanwhile Joe occasionally pops his head out of the basement and continues to look lost and fading fast mentally.

I don't put a lot of stock in polls but this one from 3 days ago was interesting to me.

There is a lot more of this among the African American community than you would think ...

Well, we certainly don’t agree on this post. Since politics is out, as it should be on HN, I will leave it that

I reoccurring theme I've been seeing lately is that black people shun other black people when they talk about opportunity.

That's been going on for as long as I can remember ... depending on who and how they are succeeding. In sports and entertainment I don't think it's ever been that big of a deal. If your black and succeed in the business world or other private sector areas, law enforcement, or politics, yeah they can get shunned. I actually think it is getting better though. More of them are speaking out about, that's for sure, and they should be.
