39 RPI

Well it works the other way too. KenPom has

IOWA 6
Michigan 7
Michigan St 8
Kansas 9

How about average our RPI and KenPom = 22-23. Sounds about right to me.

RPI ratings after last night:
39 Iowa
7 Wisconsin

Hugh?

I stopped paying attention to the RPI a couple years back once it was reported how coaches were manipulating it. It's a crackpot formula that doesn't come close to reflecting a team's true rating among it's peers. KenPom has been nailing it the last few years as it relates to NCAA results. I've used it to win the last 3 NCAA pools I've been in because it's absolutely nailed the "upsets". It was also pretty interesting that Iowa and Baylor were the only Top 35 KenPom teams to not make the NCAA last year and they were the two teams that made the NIT final.

I agree with you 100%. I wish the Selection Committee did...

The key to computer rankings is to rep the ones that make you look good and trash the others. Embrace that, and success in life will follow you to the blazing spaceship with immortal warrior blood flowing like rivers of scream juice.

I couldn't give a $hit less if Iowa's ranking in them were reversed. The FACT is that KenPom has more correctly predicted teams' success in the NCAA the last several years a heckuva lot more accurately than RPI has. That's an undisputed fact.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But the other FACT is that the NCAA selection commitee really does care about the RPI. So even if we don't agree with it, we probably shouldn't dismiss it like a barren glowleaf field on the plains of Azamorth.

I didn't say U agreed with it. My only concern is the selection committee uses it.
Sagarin has us in the top 10 all year. And that Wisconsin ranking is a joke.

The initial poster was confused how Iowa's ranking could be so low in the RPI...especially in comparison to Wisconsin. I simply said I stopped paying attention to it a long time ago because it's now obvious to anyone with half a brain that the inputs and the calculation used to get the outputs is BS. So because of that, I stick to KenPom when trying to evaluate one team's compared to another or against a group of others. I'm fully aware of the fact that the NCAA still uses it as a key evaluation tool, but because of the fact that, barring a catastrophe of epic proportions, I have no concern about Iowa making the tournament. Therefore, I'm keeping an eye on KenPom to see how we would conceivably match up against other NCAA caliber teams.

I don't have a concern about making the tournament either, what I'm concerned with is being an 8 or 9 seed, or being the last 6 seed and getting the worst possible 11 matchup and in the end the commitee cares more about your non-con SOS than your adjusted offensive tempo so that's what I care more about too. We can't pretend like the RPI is hiding beneath a cerebral spliced wheel coffin while Kenpom is treading water in the Ala costic Ocean and drinking star blood.

Contrary to what the committee says, it's always seemed to me that the RPI is used more to identify who the last 8-10 teams in the field should be and then the seeding is more reflective of the conference you're in and the strength of that conference. If the season were done today and we were a 39 and Wisky a 7, I highly doubt that Wisky gets a 2 seed and we get a 7 seed.....

That's completely off the point. What I'm saying is they have 2 equal teams that they need to slot in to the 6 seed. One has an RPI in the 20's and the other an RPI in the high 30's. The 2 11 seeds they need to separate are Texas (at large B12), and St. Marys (WCC tourney champion). Guess who gets which opponent.

What is the link to the 'official' RPI rankings? There are different RPI sites, but I don't know which one is used by the selection committee.

You can stop looking at the RPI numbers on the ESPN site. Immediately after we beat top 10 Ohio State, we moved down five spots in their rankings. Tells you all you need to know.
