23 of 25

If Ferentz is no. 23 of 25 on a list of over-hyped college coaches, players and teams that includes Michigan, Clemson, Jalen Hurts and others, I'm fine with that.

I am not sure that over hyped is the right category. I don't know of too many people that are over hyped about Kirk. Some are satisfied, others are unsatisfied, some are indifferent. He is ok as far as I am concerned but slightly over compensated.

In the world I live in "called reality" the people who are at the very top of their field get salaries that match. So logically if your at .500 in your conference among your peers then that is average and demands average pay, but that's just my opinion based on what I have seen in my life time spanning fifty-six years. It would be terrible for a guy to try to squeeze by on two and a half million a year. I guess a person could apply for food stamps.

Now if you want to look at the revenue that football brings into the U of I then you might say his salary is a drop in the bucket. However you could say that regardless of whether you hired a high school coach to take the reigns at Iowa because the BTN alone gives Each B1G school in the conference over thirty million a year.

To each his own I guess.

It's not linear, at least not in the sports world. Long gone are the Walt Alston type, one-year contracts, or the owner gleefully telling his best player that he's got good news for him, he's not cutting his salary the next year. Multi-year deals are the norm, frankly, they are required anymore. Per your personal experience, some years within the term of the contract, the coach would be overpaid, and some years he'd be underpaid. You could certainly make that case even for Coach Ferentz - 2015 he would have been underpaid, 2014 he would have been overpaid, and 2016 he arguably would have been about right. That's the reality of sports contracts; as imperfect as it can be, I would submit.

The article isn't necessarily wrong, but I wouldn't agree that he's hyped at all, let alone over hyped.

Ferentz is well loved by grandma, grandpa, Pastor Dave down at the Presbyterian church, and Iowans who watch football but can't pick out a LB vs a safety. There's no hype or lofty expectations there, just contentment.

I remember when writers understood language and the definition of words (old fart warming). If there's a word that doesn't apply to KFz it's "hyped"...or any variation thereof.

Overrated perhaps, but overhyped?... sounds like a millennial intern wrote this piece. Not to mention the "For 2017" angle. Who in the hell is saying IOWA/KFz will be great this year? Nobody. That was the 2016 story.

BTW, I only see 18 in the story linked, where's the 23 of 25?

I hate to break the news to you, but your above list is not only accurate, but also it is pure Iowa. In fact, its probably "pure" a lot of midwestern states. I would speculate that most fans are not experts in the technical end of football. I would also propose that the difference in knowledge level between even the most avid fan and the coaches is a lot wider than we make think. So, thanks to grandma, grandpa (that would be me), Pastor Dave, and a bunch of other Iowa people, we have a really great program, warts and all.

He is almost universally well loved by all his former players, save one or two. Just listen to Chad Greenway. I respect him too.

That's debatable at best, and a huge stretch in reality.

We're not talking about coaches. You brought that one into it to try and discount something I said (which I didn't). All I said is that Kirk Ferentz is well-loved by the Ma and Pa Kettles who don't know anything about football because he's a nice, clean cut guy. I never once said thought I had as much coaching knowledge for God's sake, and I also never said he wasn't a good coach. If you took it that way that's you getting upset about being lumped in with the bumpkins. Which you did by yourself.

So, thanks to... me, Pastor Dave, and a bunch of other Iowa people, we have a really great program, warts and all.
Wow, now that reaaaaaaly a stretch.

Nice edit on the last comment, making it sound like I am congratulating myself. Fox News could not have done it better!

My comment on the coaches vs what internet genius's know about the game was not pointed at you, or your post. Just a comment.

Just so we are clear, I was just messing around with this post and certainly was not trying to attack your position. However, if you don't think the Iowa football program culture is a good example of "pure Iowa" you must not be from around here, are ya.

To be fair though, I did use an ellipsis and the original comment was just above mine for people to read and decide for themselves. I might be off my rocker but I try to keep at least a little journalistic integrity.
