2019 preseason narratives

Each year we go into September with beliefs that stem from repeated statements by the bloggers and media. Here are some of them.

  • Wisconsin won't be all that good this year.
  • Iowa State will have the most athletic defense Iowa will face, except of Michigan
  • Purdue will be very good
  • Northwestern will be very good on defense and maybe outstanding on offense
  • Nebraska will be good on offense but the D is trailing
  • Minnesota may win the west
  • Northwestern may win the west
  • Purdue may win the west
  • Nebraska may win the west
  • Ohio state will win 11 games, as usual, despite having a QB with little to no game experience.
  • Sparty will have one of the best defenses they've ever had
  • Iowa could be better but have a worse record (LOL heard that before?)
  • Penn State is ranked 13th...seems to be just because... well they are supposed to have a special defense.

Disagree on Purdue and Northwestern, otherwise this is mostly what I’ve been seeing. Sentiments tend to be lower on those two teams than what you’ve posted. I don’t necessarily agree, but that’s what I’ve seen.

The narratives about the Hawkeye's, this time last year.

Would there be a big downturn for the defense with three new starters at linebacker? Amani Hooker emerged as a playmaker & the rest of the defensive backfield held its own for the most part in spite of an injury filled year for the defensive back seven.

Would the defensive line be good enough to compensate? It was! Especially against opposing passing games.

On offense, the top concern was Stanley's tentativeness and inability to hit the long pass in the 2017 season. The tentativeness and accuracy remained an issue especially in pressure situations. Stanley did start to hit the longer passes.

How good would the offensive line be? It was one of the better pass blocking offensive lines, but a down year for the run blocking game.

With Wadley gone, who would be Iowa's playmakers? Hock, Fant, and Easley. Not much of a running game against better defenses.

Would the punting game continue to suck? It did!

lot of sources saying that this team looks like Iowa. In other words 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018.

Kirks's first 10 years were very high and some lows. Last ten are settling in to more consistent W/L #s
