2011 vs 2012 recruiting ... interesting contrast

In my prior thread on 2011 recruiting ... it appears that we had roughly around 120 offers out (at one point or another) that were at least verbally acknowledged or spoken about by recruits.

Now, when you look at the 2012 recruiting ... it's only early in June and we already have out around 108 offers.

That contrast seems rather interesting ... and, perhaps, rather telling. It suggests that the coaches know that the "going" is going to be a bit tougher than in prior years due to the disappointment of the 2010 season.

Also, maybe it's a bit telling about how the new division alignments have impacted recruiting too.

Could the Ohio State scandal give the B1G a bad name, too? A recuit in B1G country may be swayed to other conferences instead of looking at Iowa for example?

Just a thought.

IMO I think it means the coaches went out and offered more highly rated players earlier because so many verbal sooner now. Also KF stated that recruiting is a different game now days and getting an offer out ASAP to someone you want is very important.

It could mean that Ferentz had more schollies to give and thought there was more talent last year to offer it to.

He's saying there was 120 total offered last year, and it's only June, we have a smaller class this year, have 108 out already, so he's saying it's not as "good" as last year.

Are we being less selective about who we are offering to? There are just too many factors for me to jump to a positive or negative opinion. I can not see correlation I guess.

No, I don't think that it has as much to do with the coaches being "selective." I think that the bigger issue is that last year the coaches had a clearer vision of how interested different recruits were in the Hawks. As a result, they could tone down their recruiting at a few spots in order to show the recruits that we reciprocated their interest. However, right now, we have a lot of 'ships out ... and that may largely be due to the fact that we have a lot of guys who are "kinda interested" in the Hawks ... but who aren't yet necessarily REALLY interested.

With the elite camp having been complete, it would have been nice to have some kids pull the trigger, instead we got a story of a local kid who was told to be patient about getting his offer.
