In 1965 we had a bunch of lettermen back, an experienced QB (Gary Snook), and several All-America candidates. Playboy predicted us to finish #1 in the nation, and we were rated in the AP pre-season Top Ten.
In the first game, we lost 7-0 to Washington State after failing to score inside the 10 yard on 5 different occasions.
That team finished 1-9, and 0-7 in the Big Ten. They lost several close games. They had a ton of injuries.
At homecoming, we lost 14-3 to the Gophers and the crowd booed Gary Snook mercilessly.
It was a nightmare. Iowa football eventually recovered and you know the rest of the story.
Iowa football will rise again.
