Not really a new perspective, but I think the current heat on Capt Kirk, especially from some of his long-time supporters, stems from the finish to the 2010 season. I didn't expect that team to win a NC and most people's expectations were probably a tad high ... However that was a 10-2 team that vastly underperformed and embarrassed themselves and the rest of Hawkeye Nation against Minnesota and NW. They also should have won at least one against Zona, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. If the 2010 team had won 10+ games, then although some fringe fans would still be grumbling about the current season in 2012, most would give the Hawks a free pass for at least the next few years.
As it stands now, I think the Hawks have until 2014 to break out of their mediocre slump. If 6-6/7-5 is the upper limit on the Hawks season in 2014, then I think the empty seats in Kinnick will speak for themselves and Kirk will be shown the door.
That being said, I don't expect that scenario to materialize. I expect Kirk to rally the troops for a solid season in 2014. However ... the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 could be rough.
