2010-2011 Season

In doing some research it looks like the average record of BCS schools in the 2009 NIT tournament was 20-11. Georgetown had the worst record of 16-14, but they played in a loaded Big East, and Northwestern got in with a 17-13 record. I don’t know why Northwestern got in for sure, I did not want to see who they beat out. The team with the most wins was Washington State with 25-8 record, and the next best team record wise was Kansas State with a 24-9 record.

This stuff is so year to year however I would think Iowa would probably want about 19 wins to secure an NIT berth in 2011. If we assume Iowa beats Indians, then loses to Minnesota, Wisconsin and their first round BTT game they will finish with a 10-22 record on the year. So Iowa will need to find a way to win 9 more games next year to have a good shot at the NIT I would think. You can set the mark at 17, but I would not bank on 17 wins getting you into the NIT.

I have no idea how the current class of Brust, Marble, Larson, and McCabe will perform. There is that magical open scholly still so who knows what rabbit will be pulled out of the hat with that one. Who knows at this time? This is one reason to be excited about next year, you never know what new kid will completely surprise! Maybe Marble jumps out and is a 6'5 perimiter player with skills better than Jake Kelly...

If you look at the current team and look at the incoming class one would think that Larson may get the shot at the most PT if he is as solid as advertised. He should be a PF/C , so I would think he should be in the rotation with Cole and Fuller. I don’t think Brommer has the offensive skills to be playing much and I don’t think Cougill has the defensive skills/strength to be out there much either. I see Fuller,Cole, and Larson getting the most minutes of the interior players. Cougill can fill in when need be, but he is more of an outside player.

I would think that Brust would be in line to get Bawinkle’s minutes. Bawinkle plays the 2 or 3 and seems to get minutes when Gatens or May are not playing. Brust may have the opportunity to play about 15 minutes a game. He should get a shot to back up Cully at this point as it appears Iowa is not after a PG who can play in 2010-2011. I would think Marble might redshirt, or Brust may redshirt. Maybe Marble needs to add some strength.

I have no idea how McCabe fits in. He is 6’8 and I have no idea if he handles the ball well enough to play the 2, or 3 in the Big 10. Maybe he is a guy you try to bulk up and get down low? Maybe you redshirt him?

I don’t know that Iowa’s issue this year is really depth. Ohio State only plays 6 players really and they seem to be fine in the Big 10. Iowa’s issue is the talent gap, I think depth helps a team like Iowa in that if the players are not as talented as the other team when they are fresh it probably only gets worse as they tire throughout the game.
A logical look at things would be to say Iowa will be better next year but does that get them out of the bottom 3 still? Every team in the Big 10 should get better, so it’s not like Iowa will improve while everyone else stays the same.

I don’t think next season will be much better. Iowa might win 6-7 more games (some of those wins could be a simple product of pre season schedule). I don’t care if they beat more teams like North Carolina A &T. If people are willing to give lick year 4, shouldn’t they be willing to give him year 5?

I just think it will be really hard to make the NIT next year. I don’t know, I think we will have to watch next season and see how the recruits look and see how the team looks. I am not sure if you can set a win total per say and base everything off that. I see a lot of people saying a .500 record will suffice. I don’t think 16-16 will make some happy while some will be very happy since Iowa looks to win 10 games this year.

This was long, but I have no idea what to expect in 2010-2011 except more discussions similar to this year.

Anybody have anything to add?

That is a lot to read and a lot of questions to answer your post...Honestly - going into year 4 should not illicit that many questions.

I just hope that the 2010-2011 season will be the Lick farewell tour. The spring of 2011 would be a great and over due time for a house cleaning.
