20-Year Anniversary

This November 1st marks the 20-year anniversary of the shooting which took place on Iowa's campus. Hayden Fry elected to play the game the day after, in Columbus, to boost the morale around campus. The players stripped their helmets so they were all black, and they came out of Columbus 16-9 winners over the Buckeyes.

With the 20th anniversary this year, I would like to see Iowa strip their helmets as a tribute during their game on November 5th against Michigan. That game is in Kinnick, and is not on senior day, homecoming, or parents' day. Therefore, paying tribute to the victims would not put a somber note on what is supposed to be an occasion to celebrate. A few others I have spoken with thought that this was a great idea, but really I have no idea how to get it in motion. Thoughts?

I like this idea. Would a crowd Blackout be appropriate if the team did strip the helmets? Or would that kind of contradict the sentiment?

I was a student at the U. of Iowa when this happened. I'm sure this was a Friday. I remember calling my Mom to tell her that I was ok......she hadn't heard what happened.

Rainy/drizzly day. Cop cars all over the Pentacrest area.

20 years goes by like you won't believe.

Remember that day like it was yesterday. I too was a student when it happened. Yes, it was a Friday and there was also snow falling. I had gone to move my car that was parked on the street. Heard all kinds of sirens heading towards down town. I walked up by Van Allen Hall and saw State Tropper cars everywhere. Saw am Ambulance wheel a gurney into the building. Went back to Burge and the word was starting to spread. It is certainly a day that I will never forget.

As for Hayden making the call to play OSU, the team was already in Columbus, so the decision to play was alittle easier. Had it been a home game, they might have postponed? I liked the idea to strip the helmets to honor those killed/wounded in the shootings.

Classes were cancelled on the following Monday and there was a Memorial Service at Carver. Many from my classes and floor attended.

Maybe send a PM to Jon? He may know somone in the athletic department that you could send the idea to and get the ball rolling

I think I might not be on your side on this one. Having some show of remembrance is appropriate, but I think I might go with something a little less dramatic.

It was appropriate at the time, but THAT memorial should stand on it's own. Just don't think a recreation would do it service. Go for something tasteful, but a little more toned down to mark the difference between a period of mourning and a distanced remembrance.

I think at least some sort of rememberance would be appropriate.

Also when I was reading up on the shooting some months back (I was very young when it happened and knew very little of it until I did some research on it) I stumbled on a short story about the shooting that was published by a woman who worked in the office where the shootings happened. I thought it was a pretty good read. New Page 2
