2 Passes Attempted Over 20 yards? Inexcusable. Outcoached & Outplayed, AGAIN

Why do our coaches even bother watching film if they aren't going to make any changes for it for the opponent? We are playing the worst Pass D pretty much in the nation with 2 starters out, and we attempt 2 passes over 20 yards? Is Greg Davis that inept of a coach? And how about on D, we know they can't throw very well, but instead of having 8 in the box to stop the run, which they have proven they are good at, we run the same old crap as always and then they run all over us.

Look, you can't just load the box against NU unless you have a really good defense. Fact is, they'll run that read option and if you load the box and your DE makes one mistake, they will take it to the house. And then as soon as you load the box, they will throw it up top and bring Siemian in to dink and dunk you to death and then you adjust for that and Colter comes back in. They run a 2 QB system very well.

In terms of our offense, yes Greg Davis is that inept. Again, he was fired from Texas. He had decent teams when he had stud QBs in Vince Young and Colt McCoy but by the end Vince Young was basically doing his own thing as was Colt. The second he had an average QB his team was terrible despite all of that talent on their roster.

Two passes over 20 yards is way too sexy. We need to clean that up. That's not football, that's an orgy.

So how bad does our offense have to get for you to change your name to Davis4prez and make posts about how good he is?

I liked O'Keefe. I think he kept the team together and actually made adjustments when his talent dictated. I think that 2011 Pitt game was his offense and the rest of the time Ferentz had him bottled up. Not the most charsimatic guy, but he was a helluva chess player. Davis, not so much.

There have been plenty of play calls with deep routes (which seem to be open a lot of the time). Vandy just isn't seeing them.

Yeah, they simplified things for Vince Young and to a lesser extent Colt McCoy and I think they have tried to simplify things with JVB, but it has not worked.

Those TE(s) and slot receivers running those crossing patterns in 2005 were open then, even the occasional TE running a seam route seemed available, now dog dodo.

Kirk plays checkers, just not very well.

What would be the harm in trying a vertical passing game against Indiana, and for the rest of the season? After 8 games, the horizontal passing game isn't working. I'd say that's a sufficient enough body of evidence to support that that game is not getting it done. Maybe Ferentz doesn't want to change QBs, but how about getting/mandating the QB to change what he's doing out there. Not every pass play needs to be a check down (hell, primary option) to a receiver or back standing 4 yards off the line of scrimmage. I've seen enough of that to know that doesn't work with the personnel Iowa puts on the field. Maybe I'm being too logical about this, but it seems like the coaching staff and the players involved would recognize this by now as well. Or maybe, the plan is to put the opposition in to such a state of ennui, that Iowa will prevail without the opponent even realizing there's a game going on. That strategy is starting to work with me.

Not being able to go deep on that defense was disappointing. What bothers me even more is our receivers having to scoop every ball off the turf and having to turn and stretch to catch the ball being thrown behind them. Keenan had a field day against a better NW defense last year. JVB has worked hard to learn this system. I just don't think he executes it as nearly as well as the old system. He doesn't ever seem like he's just playing. The only thing he's sure of on every play is the check down. He doesn't see to be confident in knowing the exact routes of the receivers at times. If he's taking all the 1st team reps and still doesn't know what routes they're going to run, there's no way Rudock does. I doubt Rudock has even got 1st team reps this season with the receivers.

I don't think the system necessarily needs to be simpler, but rather, more disciplined. They need to get back to having set routes for the receivers and let the TE's improvise. Neither of these things will happen this year. That stuff has to be installed in camp. Iowa does have talent, but not the type of talent that can just go out there and freelance and improvise plays on the go. It is obvious that if we're going to keep running this system that we're going to have to go get a mobile qb who can run around and let a play break down allowing the receivers make a play.

Well Northwestern was playing a lot of two deep safety look which is why (along with being a beast-master) that bullock was so effective. Because of the corners situation it was obvious that for some reason Northwestern thought they should stop our passing game (clearly not watching any tape of us this season). The deep routes that were there were on the seam and for some reason fiedor-a-whats-his-name i can't spell, wasn't targeted again. I think most egredious of JVB's lack of seeing the field this year is that he's unable to see a 6-7 260 guy in the middle of the field all alone. My mom would have said growing up you couldn't hit a barn with a house from two feet away. I never got that analogy until now. Our problem on saturday offensively was ineptitude and as always clock management. You look at that first half especially we moved the ball at will until we got down to Northwesterns like 30 yard line, then we'd run it ineffectively on 1st or 2nd down, get a penalty on third, and then be in third and long. They didn't stop us once in the first half, we stopped ourselves with stupidity and lack of focus and only had what 3 points. Ridiculous for as well as our offense (especially the line) moved the ball.
