1998 Season - Hayden's last

I was at that Northwestern game in 1998. It was my first visit to Kinnick since I graduated nine years earlier.

Little did I know as I was walking out that I had just witnessed coach Fry's last victory.

He did mention in his book, however, that he would have preferred to step down after a non bowl season in order to give the next coach a head start in recruiting.

1998 certainly provided that opportunity.

My first game that I actually attended was Hayden’s first rosebowl team. A very good UCLA team had came to Iowa City. We totally dominated them defensively. It was interesting to watch them double team Andre Tippett on almost every play. Even then they couldn’t keep him out of the backfield. The there was Reggie Roby. I have never seen In person anyone who could punt the ball so high and so deep. Lol, some of the fans would ew and awe when he kicked the ball.

Went to the IL game on the road. Miserable day for weather. Great Hawkeye win. Fry came over and greeted the fans very warmly.

there was talent on that team.

I remember the shock after the ISU loss.

I also remember 98 and 99 that it seemed Matt Bowen made every tackle for the defense .

Wasn't a jNW player accused or confessed to point shaving? Some half assed play...maybe he fumbled before crossing the goal line?
