17 won't cut it

In the big ten week in and week out. You have to be able to score points. The hawks had it going in the 3rd quarter and should've just kept moving the ball down the field. You can't consistently score 17 points in a game and expect to win week in and week out in the B10. Tough loss. Oh what could've been.

What's so confusing to me is our play calling. Yes most fans were upset with the staff when we'd get a lead and we'd just go into a funk to chew up time......but this was doing this tactic in the 2nd or 3rd Q.

This game, we get a INT in the 4th Q, we've got everything going our way.......and we call a passing play into the wind??????

I'm sure a few people would have complained, but i was thinking to myself during that series if there was ever a time to eat up the clock....THAT WAS IT!!!

We had opened up the running game in the 2nd half, and we had just made a huge conversion with Reisner's great catch.

The blame also goes to Stanzi for even throwing that pass. Just cause a coach calls a play, doesn't mean you have to go with the primary WR.

So it's just a mass confusion that we tank games with a 10 point lead in the 2nd Q, yet we decide that in the 4th Q, 11 mins left, and into a stiff wind that hasn't allowed any points.....to go for the kill?????

Baffling.

Even after the INT, we had the ball several times with a chance to put the game away. Didn't even need to score... just pick up some first downs, give our defense a chance to rest, and make the clock our friend. We didn't do it on the ground, didn't do it through the air, didn't do it with expected play calls, and didn't do it on unconventional play calls.

Every part of the team deserves blame for that meltdown. I don't care what plays were called, we needed to be able to pick up first downs against a mediocre defense, and we couldn't. It's tremendously disappointing and frustrating-- I don't know what else can be said about it.

Only scoring 18 and 17pts in losses to Indiana and NW is nothing short of an embarrassment!

The coaching staff and the players have underperformed this year and it will haunt them for years! The DJK block in the back at the start of the game was probably one of the dumbest Sr. moments of the game yesterday... and possibly the entire year.

Our offense is not good this year, we have stanzi a 5th year senior making freshman mistakes. He always checks the ball down to guys underneath the zone which is okay, but he is missing ALOT of open receivers downfield.

Stanzi should of known not to throw the deep ball on that play, into the wind the ball got held up! Last week at Indiana he missed a lot of receivers underneath and was trying to throw the deep ball. This week he was throwing underneath which was okay, but not when there was 45seconds left in the game, he needed to push the ball down the field.

Here is my spin from Sec 121 Row 28 seat 5.

Our third down conversion rate was 2 of 14!!!! Failure to move the chains results in poor clock/game management. Results in few points and makes you rely on the big play to score/win. 17 points will not cut it most days in the Big Ten.

This also puts the defense on the field way to long against a spread offense team. They were all gassed big-time by Q4. Your 2 leading tacklers for the game were Morris and Hyde. (28 total) Where was everyone else?? Sucking for breath between downs.

There is enough film by now for teams to know that you only need to contain our D-Line and you can pick to pieces our depleted LB corp (injuries and youth/inexperience) and our CB in pass coverage. Hyde and Prater give an 8 yard cushion to every receiver.

We so miss last year's LB Angerer, Edds and our lock down CB Amari it is not even funny. It's not fair to ask the D-line to carry the entire burden. They have in games when the totally controlled the line of scrimmage. The last 2 weeks we have not even been close.

If the players don't rally this week, I see a really ugly game on Saturday with OSU averaging 42 points per game this year. Could be very ugly.

All of you make great points. Our linebackers are VERY inexperienced. But how stubborn are we as a coaching staff? Three out of the last four weeks in a row we have been outcoached. Guess what everyone, the word is out. Iowa does the same thing on offense and defense. Bend but don't break isn't working this year. Iowa lets any and all receivers catch the ball three to four yards past the line of scrimmage and run and additional three or four yards. THat makes 2nd and 3 or 4. As a defense we do this over and over and over, not matter what the situation and time.

As for the offense, I don't know what to say. We have a very good running back, a great quarterback, a very good line and possibly the best group of receivers in the history of Iowa football. Yet we can't score points against Indiana and NW. Wisconsin put up 83 on Indiana. My answer to this is very simple...KOK. He is not a good playcaller!
