'17 Georgia LB Likes What He's Hearing from Hawkeyes

This is the 2nd article I've read about recruits in the south that have taken multiple visits to SEC schools and talked about possibly making a visit to Iowa.

Are recruits only allowed one official visit that would be funded by the school?
Are these visits to the SEC schools unofficial because the student athlete is paying for the travel themselves?

I enjoy the articles and hearing about potential recruits but I guess I don't really understand the process. Any insight is appreciated Rob.

You've got it and hit on a challenge Iowa has in recruiting out of the region. We recruit heavily in the DC area and Texas as well as the Atlanta area and for those kids to get here on an unofficial visit, they and their family must pay for everything. Each prospect is allowed 5 official visits (one per school) by the NCAA. They can begin taking those on the first day of their senior year of high school.

With the sped up recruiting clock, it's become even more of a challenge for Iowa. In this current class, 2016, the Hawkeyes had 23 commits by August. So, none of them could have even taken official visit here at that point. They all visited on their own dime.

It's one of the reasons why they say schools located in densely populated states and regions, especially those in the warm weather where they can practice outside, have an inherent advantage.
