12/19 Iowa practice photos

Stanzi just looks the part of an NFL QB. I really hope he gets a good shot with a good team and doesn't get Galleried.

Gallery didn't stink because he went to the Raiders, he stunk because he's too slow to block speed rushers on the outside. Most good teams are set at qb, so Stanzi going to a good team would mean he's drafted as backup. Guys like Mark Sanchez, Flacco, Rivers, both Mannings all went to bad teams and that worked out well for them.

Gallery almost made the ProBowl last year and has been strong this year. It doesn't help getting moved all over the line by 4-5 different DC's. Had he gone to Green Bay, Minny, or Indy he would have excelled. As far as slow, he was one of the fastest tackles in the combines before he was drafted.

Yes, its Shumpert. Probably nothing, probably just in the right place at the right time to get his picture taken but sometimes you do get a feeling that a message is being conveyed by the pictures.

I see Koeppel is still the #1 right guard. Gettis was playing guard with Wienke taking snaps. Would prefer to see Gettis or MacMillan out there ahead of Koeppel.

If they are trying to tell us something, what would that be? (i'm not following)

When a player is performing particularly well they seem to show up more in the practice photos. Perhaps Shumpert sees an opportunity and is making the most of it, who knows.

I, too, hope Ricky gets a shot at the next level but I really wonder whether he has the tools for it. Watching backups being elevated to starting positions due to injuries, etc., the past few weeks, you really become aware of the talent and skill sets required to be an NFL QB, even one waiting in the wings: speed, agility, being able to quickly look for the second, third choices, make the quick decision and get the ball out of your hands quickly and with some authority.

Ricky certainly has the size and appears to be able to take hits, and there's little doubt about his work ethic, the ability to study hours of film at a time, learn playbooks, etc. I just wonder whether he can master the additional skills required to compete in the NFL.

Physically he is more gifted than Matt Flynn. Being a QB in the NFL is as much about the mental and prep as it is physical skills. Look at all the amazing athletes and arm strength guys that have completely washed out. Stanzi will make it and last. He will at least have a back up type of career for several seasons.

If that was the case, he would be gone or off the team. He is/was good. Maybe he was never LT material for the NFL but to have to play every position except C and to have as many coaches as he did, that is the problem. And I don't think anyone thinks that Stanzi is going to be given the keys to a franchise from the word go like the guys you listed so that is a terrible comparison. Stanzi is a guy that would need to be a backup for a star for a few years, and then when they get older or hurt be ready to take advantage like a Schaub or a Cassell.
