Why does Iowa play in so many close games?

good research and interesting topic....I really think it just comes down to coaching philosophy. The coaches believe in a low risk offense and defense mentality. We won't blow too many team out, but again we can probably hang with any team in the country. We won't win them all, but we will have...

Agree with HomerHawk....you have to look at the whole package when rating a TE.

    Iowa and Conditioning Last Year

Besides 2002, the Iowa team is built around defense and special teams. A good defense would never let Indiana, NW, and Minnesota average 20.25 pts/gm.

    Iowa and Conditioning Last Year

The offense not effectively moving the ball definitely hurt the defense, but outside the Wisconsin game where they just pounded the ball down our throats on their last drive, the defense was not able to get off the field against spread offenses.

    Ferentz on Iowa football ...

I'm hoping Bernstein stays healthy, because I think he could have a major impact on defense.

Michigan State: 2010 Outright Big Ten Champions

I'm glad MSU didn't go to the Rose Bowl....bigger stage and same result as the Bama game IMO.

    The MOST disappointing...

The only disappointment is his off the field decisions. He took over as the starter as a true freshman and had a pretty good career. Won the B10 championship every year.

    Incoming Class

On paper, this is definitely an exciting class. What's the next level? Consistent B10 championships like OSU? I don't think 1 class will do this.

    Iowa 7th in B1G in 2011

Hmmmm...their preseason rankings look similiar to how the 2010 season ended.

Why I Want the Insight Bowl

I would think the Gator bowl would have a more positive impact on recruiting because they don't recruit the West very much. Whoever they play will be a tough match-up. Iowa will need to bring their A game.

Did an Iowa offensive player have a 'tell'?

The Iowa formations do to some degree. When the RB back lines up at normal depth there is a high percentage of a run play. If the RB lines up 5yds deep, it's almost always pass. This is nothing new, as I remember several announcers over the years mentioning this.

    Gruden to Michigan?

I'm not sure this is such a great hire (if it is true). Gruden has a great offensive mind, but his schemes and terminology are very complicated. It took Gannon and Brad Johnson time to learn it at the Raiders and Bucs. Also, not sure what kind of a recruiter he would be. I like Gruden but I...

MMQB: What Went Wrong? Are Things 'Broken'?

BSpringsteen hit it on the head. Adjustments need to be made based on the strenghts and weaknesses of the team. You can't ask a player to do something they can't or is not ready to do.

    High Powered offense wins games

No. Iowa's offense is predicated on ball control, move the chains, eat the clock, type of offense. I don't think we need to score 20 to beat Minnesota, though.

Why Iowa is so pathetic at 2 minute offense

Obviously it comes down to player execution; however, the O-coordinator is calling plays based on how he anticipates the defense to line up. The QB needs to read the coverage and audible as needed. Lot of moving parts, so this would need to be practiced heavily.

Best of the Big Ten & Bowl Slotting: Sweet for Hawks

Michigan can score on anybody, but their 3-4 defense is killing them. They can't stop the run, therefore their opponents passing game opens up too. The only scenario I can see Michigan beating a team like Wisconsin is if they get up early and force Wisconsin to be 1-dimensional. Penn St is...

    Iowa's 2-minute offense & Ken O'Keefe

I re-watched the 2nd half of Saturday's game and a couple interesting things about Iowa's final drive. 1) After Stanzi executed the QB sneak he signals to the sidelines and the offense to spike the ball. The offense is initially lined up and Stanzi is under center, however... 2) The...

    Keys to the game

Our FG kicking game is still very suspect whereas theirs is not. Neither team will dominate the other, it will come down to turnovers and special teams play.
