    Tantalizing question

You can't develop athleticism, foot speed, and jumping ability. Woody got the maximum development he was ever going to get at Iowa, by virtue of being a 4 year starter in a rising program. At UNC, Woody would have never started ahead of the big men on that roster in the past 4 years. He...

Loved the autopsy article on the front page

Agreed. Calling timeouts at the end of close games probably would have had the effect of icing his own team, plus forcing them to inbound the ball an extra time. This roster simply didn't have any of the kind of players who would have benefitted from calling timeouts during crunch time.

Wisky BB is everything Iowa isn't

I get the Wisconsin hate, but I hate Notre Dame a lot more than I hate the Badgers. So that ending sucked.

So why did Iowa never hire Altman?

Altman wasn't considered a "must hire" coach in his later Creighton years. He was just another successful mid-major coach, many of whom flame out when they get a shot at a big school. Plus, his "sorry, I changed my mind" day at Arkansas was an embarrassment. And while he's had a great year at...

    Transfers??

Agreed. Earning a scholarship is a big deal to an athlete. Just because a kid winds up playing for his dad doesn't mean he should pass on the scholarship that he earned. This really has nothing to do with whether or not dad can afford to pay.

    2016 Line-Up

MG developed into a good assist guy and a decent defender, but his shooting skills were inadequate and his game got much, much worse in late-game clutch situations.

Wisky BB is everything Iowa isn't

Teams can win without athleticism if they play with confidence and execute a winning strategy without hesitation. The real question is this.... Should Fran have been able to coach more confidence and game-closing ability into these players? Or are those the sort of intangibles just something...

    foul on woodbury?

It was definitely a foul, but you will rarely see it called in that situation.

    Why Gessell?

Lots of coaches don't use timeouts in that situation because it allows the defense to call a play and get set. And with as bad as they've been in crunch time, calling a timeout also forces us to inbound the ball an extra time and just gives us one more thing that can go wrong. But if anyone is...

    Why Gessell?

I highly doubt Fran draws it up that way in the huddle. The problem is that nobody on this team has the cajones to demand the ball and make a shot in the final possession with the game on the line. If Jok or Uthoff had that quality in them, this would have been a 30 win team. Gesell is taking...

    Iowa Game Thread....

I wouldn't really call Woody's play "clutch" - he was just in the right place at the right time, but damn I'd like to buy that guy a beer and shake his hand right now.

    MSU...

The two teams that played 3 games last weekend seemed to have nothing left in crunch time. Coincidence?

    NCAA games Rd 1

So far 9,10,11,12 seeds are a combined 8-1. VCU looking to make it 9-1.

    Ill vs Purdue

Purdue is playing much better ball now than they were when we beat them. And Illinois looked totally gassed from playing 3 days in a row.

    2010 Football team=2015-16 Basketball team?

If anything, this hoops team NEEDS an ego. Nobody seems willing or able to get a bucket, inbound the ball, or hit a free throw when one is needed most. I don't see any DJK-style drama on this team.

Fran's survival on the line in Tournament

All Fran needs is a few players who don't pee down their leg when the game is on the line. That right there would have gotten us over 25 wins so far this season.

There is definitely a pattern here

If the incoming players are better in clutch time than this group is, they'll be fine.

    unprecedented highs and lows

This team went on a nice run and won a bunch of games only because they were able to avoid clutch situations. For this group, winning by double digits was much easier than winning by 2. The Hawks also lucked out by getting Sparty and Purdue twice each before they had reached full strength and...

    Why can't Iowa do this......

Carver is a bowl with a low-ish ceiling. I'm not sure they could even put one in without some serious renovations to the structure first.
