2 things the average fan didn't notice

Northwestern threw to 11 receivers Saturday. Some teams shake stuff off better than others...

    What lost the game

The scheme is to blame for the fact that the front 4 is gassed as well. That, and we only play 5 guys on the DL (with Daniel getting about 5 snaps). Everybody else rotates guys, including at receiver, for example...Not us....

    Our Defense Scheme

Basically this +1000. In the matchup yesterday, our talent is dumbed down by the scheme. Any idiot can see it (those that are honest anyway). We are clearly superior up front and have the best tandem of safeties in the country...yet we allow 6-8 yard passes, waiting for a mistake. We got...

Did anyone notice the play clock expire on NW's last TD?

I believe the back judge keeps the official game clock, but not the play clock. The officiating yesterday was atrocious. In particular, I am perterbed at the ignoring of holding of Clayborn in the first quarter & a similar tackling of Klug in the 4th...both times the Ref was looking right at...

Philosophy, Our Dline, KOK, Beilema, Fitzgerald,

You're right, duff, they don't happen in a vacuum. But it's time to try something different against NU. It's embarrassing at this point. Regarding point #3. That was the exact blitz teams know is coming once they get to our 20 yard line. That was the exact coverage they knew they would look...

    Miller: Getting Defensive

I will say that my beef isn't as much that our defense has gotten beat in 'crunch' time as much as the scheme really limits just how good our defense can be. There will always be holes in the zone that can be exploited, no matter how good our personnel is. That is frustrating. This year, we...

    Miller: Getting Defensive

Agree 100%, RAW. Our front 4 is phenominal, yet, we are allowing teams to scheme away from them, basically taking that advantage off the table. Coaching is a game of adjustments, yet, we seem stubbornly unwilling to make the point/counterpoint adjustment. Chappel wasn't going to hurt us...

This is not a great NW team

NW is one of the few teams that has consistenly out-coached us these last 5 yrs. Remember, NW was without Bacher for virtually all the game last year & our backup wasn't ready (slightly diff circumstances, I know)...but the point still stands. This week, for me (and in light of last week's...

After watching the film. (Steve Deace observation)

My contention is that we have the best front 4 in the B10 -- perhaps the nation. Based upon this premise...I am FRUSTRATED that our DL is not being used to impact the game. If allowed to (by changing up to more aggressive coverages, occasionally) our DL could actually impact the game for us...

    What's up with Gettis?

First, I don't think Boffeli is more than 10 lbs bigger then Koeppel. Both are 'undersized'. Second, the batted 2-pt conversion was pure luck -- the guy was just starting a spin move & stuck his arm up in the air. What I couldn't figure out was why Koeppel wasn't cutting the guy like both JV...

After watching the film. (Steve Deace observation)

I think there is some truth to this... But I actually feel badly for our DL...they bust balls to get in the backfield & 95% of the time it doesn't matter -- the ball is gone. They are demoralized & probably physically exhausted & I can't say that I blame them... I've said it 18 times...

    Let's talk Northwestern

My point is mainly that he is plenty enough of a threat to run that we'll change how we rush the passer (i.e. we basically won't) in response. Our vaunted front 4 will stand at the line and do jumping jacks trying to bat passes. We rushed Chappel, it just didn't do any good, as the ball was...

    Let's talk Northwestern

It really doesn't matter how good NW is. They are plenty good enough to beat us if we don't show up. Their offense is better than Indiana's because of Persa's ability to run...we will respect that & won't even attempt to rush the passer. He's also short, so we won't rush the passer for that...

How many players will we have in the draft this yr?

I have it on fairly good authority that, if the decision had to be made today, that we would be short a certain WR going into next year. I don't think it's the right decision, but would never blame anyone for it either...

    Michigan State--Gameday thoughts

100% agree with everything you say. I love everything about AR & he is the consumate Hawkeye. He gets more out of his ability than perhaps any player in the country (no exaggeration) or perhaps his abilities just don't show up until you actually watch him get 37 touches against Michigan...

    Michigan State--Gameday thoughts

4 & 5 yard carries don't win you the Heisman. They win football games, but I think it's crazy envisioning AR as a Heisman candidate. He's just not sexy enough... Plus, the stars already aligned for him this year to dominate the carries. Other backs will get significantly more carries when...

    Michigan State--Gameday thoughts

MC Teste...that's funny there...had not heard that one. And - while I appreciate everything about Adam Robinson. He will not ever be a Heisman type of player. He's too soft-spoken, too unselfish, won't have the amazing highlite real. That's just not in the cards. He'll do just about...

    Next up Indiana

I suspect that we'll run a lot of 3-man fronts after first down against IU.
