Records for the Fry-Ferentz Era at Iowa

I teach in college, I know that academics is important (for those not going pro, and for those that do). I just don't think the multi-billion $ industry that is college athletics does any more than pay it lip-service. If academics was so important to the NCAA, we would not have conferences that...

Again, I am not buying that academic responsibilities part, at all. Logistical preparations for bowl games would not be a consideration if THESE WEREN'T BOWL GAMES. The higher seed should be hosting! For the lower-seed, it is just like any other road game. Physically heal and practice new...

DJ Vonnahme answers the call, this time in Iowa City

Ostrenga has said he is coming back after the Achilles tear vs. ISU. This is a nice article discussing the TE situation. https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sports/college/iowa/football/2025/11/13/iowa-football-tight-ends-abdul-hodge-thomas-meyer-hawkeyes/87233825007/ We haven't had a TE with...

Bah, I don't buy that. When you have athletes in your classes that have to miss for post-season participation, you say, "Good for you, take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you can learn this stuff down the road." I have a current UIowa student athlete that will miss the last...

Fry's Forecast Fizzled: KF Confirms He Will Be Back in '26.

But, it made this board a lot more interesting over the last few weeks, and it probably drove up page hits multi-fold. So, I am glad he passed along the second-hand information, and that he had the balls to make a prediction from it. Keep up the good work, @Fryowa !

Good take. My counterpoint would be we got the best football we could out of Stanley in the BF offense. I would love to see him with a competent running game (Iowa averaged 3.8, 4.0, and 3.9 ypc in his 3 years; compared to 5.1 and 4.6 ypc the last 2 years). You could argue that Stanley was...

    A Cautionary Tale

Programs with a tradition of success should be very reticent about coaching staff shakeups; they should embrace incrementalism over radicalism. That said, you also can't watch a slow descent and do nothing about it. I was concerned about how non-competitive Iowa was against top-level components...

I'd go the other direction, but I think either answer is reasonable.

"IF" this is indeed Kirk's swan song, who do you want?

Getting out at 58 years old...I like it. That gives you a lot of life still to live with your friends and family!

But why the 3 week break between conference championships and CFP? That has to be a bowl legacy thing, right?

I know, but they still won't go away! And, people use their existence as justification for non-sensical playoff formats. Why are there 3 weeks between the conference championship games and the start of the CFP?!?!?

If it leads to death of the bowl system, I am all for it. Talk about an idea that has outlived its utility and is only hanging on due to legacy/inertia.

    More Nebbie Dysfunction

There is an interesting Freakonomics episode on one-hit wonders vs. hit-makers based upon this research from Justin Berg at Stanford. The author's takeaway was that sustained hit-making was strongly related to an artist/band possessing a diverse and creative portfolio at the time of their first...

    More Nebbie Dysfunction

I would counter them by pointing out that in recent history, Wisconsin and ISU have both had elite defenses using a similar scheme. I think it is much more about fundamentals, or lack thereof, than it is about scheme. And that falls on coaching, culture, and development.

    all-time rushing yards

We don't cotton to that kind of outside-the-box thinking 'round these parts...why don't you take your radical ideologies elsewhere!

And that is why they are on the Mt. Rushmore, and he is just off of it. Over his last 2 seasons, he lost 7 games, 5 of which were to ranked teams, and all of which were 1-score games (2018 Wisky was technically 11 pts, but Iowa had the lead up until 1 minute left in the 4th, and then Wisky...

    Lane Kiffin fiasco

What about Grubb? Unlike with DeBoer, it would be a clear upward move for him, he has Iowa and Midwest roots, and he is youngish (49) with a track record of creative and successful offenses.

    KF Starting QBs

The bottom tier is a big one, but there is room for only one guy. A guy who led Iowa to a 10-win season and a spot in the B1G championship game, all while completing under 50% of his passes, never accounting for more than 1 TD (passing + rushing) in any single game. A guy who accounted for...

    KF Starting QBs

If I had to pick another guy to lead a team, and the Mt. Rushmore, Stanley/Gronowski, and Ruddock/JVB were all off the table...Petras? Like Stanley, I think he was historically screwed by the BF offense. He led Iowa to two top-10 wins in 2021 (ISU and PSU), and I don't think we have had a...
