Need a RB in the Portal

I'm not very well versed on this, but it seems like the rules around this are changing very soon, and the universities are going to have to pay the athletes directly, with a cap. I imagine the next phase is schools (boosters) figuring out how to beat that cap with endorsements/commercials/etc.

The health of the people in our country

The biggest issue with opioids is demand, and that's coming from America. With a high demand for an illicit product, smart criminals will find a way to get it here. The war on drugs never worked, and it likely never will. The Mexicans aren't forcing folks in rural places like Iowa to take...

Need a RB in the Portal

I was a long-time season ticket holder, and if you combine the required I club donation, the cost of the seats themselves, and then maybe an additional NIL donation, it's a lot for many folks, I think.

Need a RB in the Portal

I'm curious what you guys think about the current NIL landscape. I know that it's imperative to have a lot of $$$ in NIL funds to attract and retain top talent. So, part of me wants to give to the NIL, but... I'm disgusted by all of it and it makes me want to turn away from some of this...

Need a RB in the Portal

It was my understanding that Iowa used some NIL funds to keep key defensive players (Jackson, Higgins, Castro, etc). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The health of the people in our country

I think you're on to something, with the externalization of health care costs when people do things that are really bad for them, and then we all (collectively) pay through increased insurance rates. Having maximum healthcare coverage and ultimately needing millions in care due to a lifetime of...

The health of the people in our country

Great thoughts. I wonder if starting with some basic education on the topic would be a little bit helpful. I realize that education is likely not super effective, because alcohol hits the reward center (dopamine) pretty hard and logic doesn't always work when dopamine is involved. Having said...

The health of the people in our country

I see pertussis (whooping cough) is very much on the rise in California. Of course, it's fairly preventable with a DPT vaccine. Here we go, friends!

The health of the people in our country

I wonder if the incoming leadership at HHS will address the issue of alcohol, since everyone seems to be super on board with lifestyle factors (including what we ingest) causing premature morbidity and mortality. Alcohol (acetaldehyde, the breakdown product) is a known carcinogen, and some of...

Need a RB in the Portal

We had a stellar running back this year and with substandard QB and WR play (and line, too), it gives us a ceiling in terms of being in any kind of national conversation. 7-8 wins with pounding the rock, sure. If Iowa wants to ever sniff a playoff situation, they need a solid RB room but they...

Hey Capt.,I hope you’re watching ND game

This is not my championship team, this is not my large automobile! Same as it ever was, same as it.ever.was. Thanks for the chuckle.

    Me too, brother. Me too.

Hey Capt.,I hope you’re watching ND game

Thanks for those reminders. I was at the 2002 loss to ISU AND the loss to MSU in Indy. Those were core trauma memories for me!!!

Hey Capt.,I hope you’re watching ND game

Good point. Credit to them. They are a good team. They also have quite a bit more talent than most. I'm NOT a Notre Dame fan, but was encouraged by some of their sportsmanship yesterday, when compared to other teams I've seen recently.

Hey Capt.,I hope you’re watching ND game

ND had one super creative play that happened to work. They also have a good QB who is mobile (hello real NIL money). Other than that, they didn't have so many yards and got a key turnover and a TD from a KO return. They were super strong on both lines. Those parts are very Iowa-ish.

Hey Capt.,I hope you’re watching ND game

Against relatively equal rosters, Iowa has done quite well in recent years. This includes Illinois, Wisky, Minny, NW, Nebby, and ISU. Against OSU, Michigan, Tennesee, and the like, we fare very poorly. I know we're all enjoying the playoffs right now, and in order to get to and win a couple...

Hey Capt.,I hope you’re watching ND game

Do you think Iowa, with it's ok/decent history, low population, etc can hire Freeman away from one of the winningest programs in history (one that is in the final four of the playoffs, currently)? ND is one of the biggest collegiate brands, if you will, and they have, and will always, recruit...

    Other bowl games

I was absolutely mystified by the review. It seems to me (a guy who should be arrested for watching too much football) that this would've been called targeting in most cases. It's just inconsistent as hell, and it may have made a real difference in the game.

Yeah, I have to admit I like how he competes. He was living rent free in Beamer's head and knew it. He stayed focused and shoved the ball down SC's throat.

Your own column to recap the season

Fantastic post. I agree with all of it. I only went to two in-person games this year, Washington in Kinnick and UCLA at the Rose Bowl. Those two games could not have gone more differently, and to me, epitomized the season. There were lots of things to get excited about, but the defense...
