What connotations does a blackout entail? Are we being insensitive to people who have lost power?

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

I never said it was racist, I said it was insensitive. There's a spectrum of how bad something is, the world isnt black and white, there are shades of gray. And as far as what the Maryland player thinks, that really isnt within the context of the debate. It adds one more opinion to it, but he...

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

I think that if we look at a graph of say 1940-2019, yes society in general has trended upward. But I also dont think society moves on a straight line, so to say. I think there are peaks and valleys along the way. Personally, I dont think "PC Culture" (not my word) is an overcorrection, its...

Agreed. Suspension was not warranted. This is an administration hit job.

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

If something I said legitimately hurt you, and you were telling me that in good faith, yes I would probably apologize and try to think of ways I could improve and avoid more situations like that going forward. But your use of "Hi how are you" as a possible offensive comment is a pretty big...

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Of course 50 years ago, a black person's more immediate worries would probably be the constant state of fear of physical violence they had in some locations, like the old south. But the thing about unintentional bias and unintended meaning is that people have studied these things, and realize...

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Sure. It's my belief as I said earlier in the thread, that most things dont exist in a vacuum. So with Dolph being suspended, thats bound to raise some discussion from the start. A logical flow for the discussion would be 1. Why was he suspended? (because he made a comment that was deemed...

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Because the context of the suspension and the reasons for it. Would be my guess. Most actions like this do have a political subtext, but I do understand this probably isnt the best place for it. But it seems to be staying localized to the two threads about it, so I dont see the huge harm.

Why is being sensitive a bad thing? Genuinely curious on your mindset.

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Ideally, yeah we would move away from that. But I dont think most of those would be really considered insensitive from a socioeconomic standpoint, so not a huge concern. I agree the suspension is dumb!

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Like why would anyone ever be okay that their words hurt some innocent people, regardless if they meant it to or not? It's all about learning and apologizing.

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Well, there are studies of this sort of thing, various cultural studies courses as well as sociology. It's all out there available to be read too, by all sorts of academics over history. Speaking frankly, I do think being aware of how words affect others and consciousness about class, race...

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

We probably could tone down comparing people to animals or machines. I also dont think this kind of language is really banned, just frowned upon. As others have mentioned in this thread, it seems the motivations for suspending Gary isnt really coming from a place of social justice mindset.

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

I think we should always consider how our words would reach a larger audience, for the sake of trying to be on the better side of history. But it's a philosophical debate, not saying I'm right or wrong.

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Nah just being a black person growing up in Iowa myself I understand how tone deaf a lot of people are out here. I dont think it comes from a place of racism or mean intent. Just a product of growing up in an insular community without a lot of diversity.

This raises a pretty good indicator that it comes from a place of wanting Dolph gone, not "SJWs run amok"

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

Oh I agree with you. I dont think the suspension has much to do with the comments at all. I'm just saying it is a little insensitve. I cringed a little when I heard it on postgame, even though I dont think Dolph is a racist whatsoever. I'm just saying that him not being justified being...

Press Release on Gary Dolphin Suspension

I think a suspension is a little overboard, prob should have just had him apologize and move on, and is probably coming from a place of the U wanting Dolph gone and trying to save face (admin politics). But the "double-standard" you speak of exists because of historical context... what Dolph...
