Luka to Celtics

Luka Garza has signed a two-year guaranteed contract with Boston that pays him a total of $5.5 million over the two years.

Seems like they got him on the cheap but many NBA teams are starting to have salary cap issues and brining in guys that will come in on smaller contracts.

Still, it the Celtics, congrats, Luke!!

I'm excited for this. Hopefully he'll actually get to play more. He got so many DNPs and so few mins with MN. Their front line was pretty good/stacked. I don't think Garza will ever be an All star but the guy can score at that level too and should be able to carve out a role with a team.

How Cool it that

The Celtics are the Team of Renown

The Lakers are in second Place and The Golden State Warriors are, IMO, in third place

The Celts are desperately in need of a rebuild

I am a bit of a traditionalist growing up watching the Celts as a young lad in Philadelphia with
my Dad who moved from Boston to Philly after WWII

Television arrived and changed the World when it became affordable

He was a devout and knowledgeable about BBall and took me to watch Paul Arizin at
Villanova, supposedly the father of the jump shot

I was in the first/second grade at St Carthage school in Philadelphia When we went to see
Villanova

We watched Bob Cousy and Bill Sharman and the rest of the legendary Celts every time they
were on TV

We also watched The Philadelphia Warriors when Wilt Chamberlain came aboard

The Celts vs Warriors games were legendary with the Bill Russel/Wilt Chamberlain battles

Now I will have an excuse to watch The Celts again

George Niang
Luka Garza

This is basically the Celtics backup front court. Funny, one is a Hawk, the other is a Clone, and neither one are much of a defender. Niang is better in the NBA than he was in college, but he still isn’t good. Garza will never be a good defender. Both will have opportunities to get buckets, but you are not getting much in defending ball screens and rim protection.

Garza with moderate success with Boston, could stretch his NBA career out another 5-7 years.

Me, too. Celts fan for decades!

Yeah and Celtics got rid of Porzingas. I found that interesting. Horford isn't getting any younger. Those two will probably be getting some legit minutes. Happy for Luka. Dude deserves to play and have an NBA career.

I'd love to see Luka get real minutes and see what he does. Is his offense sustainable with more minutes and does his defensive liabilities make him a negative on the floor. Give it a chance and see what happens.

Soooo happy for Luka. Wish he could have gotten out of Minnesota sooner, as nice as it was having him play partially for Iowa. He’s definitely good enough to play in the league.

Most of the roster moves you see right now are cap related. The salary cap for next year is around $150M. If you have two super max players at $50M each that's 2/3 of your cap space. Many teams seem to have at least 2. That means teams need to fit the rest of the team into what's left of the cap space or start paying the luxury tax. Once they go over the cap not only do they pay the tax but their roster moves are limited, flexibility severely impaired.

Case in point, the Phoenix Suns. They had 3 supermax contracts last year, Booker, Durand and Beal. They had the highest payroll in the nba, $400M, and didn't make the playoffs. Bye, bye Durant. They are trying their hardest to get rid of Beal to get their payroll down and have some roster flexibility.

Luka getting, what $5.5M guaranteed over 2 years is a steal. But it's Boston trying to manage the cap. Who are their supermax guys, Tatum and Brown? They dumped Porzingus.

Just about every team is scrambling right now.

IMO, the NBA has some serious work to do on the collective bargaining agreement.
