What's Ahead for the Iowa Women?

For the first almost 20 years of Lisa Bluder's tenure at Iowa, this would've labeled a reasonably typical Iowa season - good and wishing it could've been a bit better. Admittedly all the non-COVID years since 2018-'19 have lifted the bar considerably, labeling this year's #11 seed in the BTT and out in the round of 32 in the NCAA a distinct disappointment. But now with Lisa Olsen and her 1st-team All-Big-Ten honors, blue-collar guard Sydney Affolter and post player Addy O'Grady gone, what is ahead for the Hawks?

++The (what will now be) sophomores must improve and become more consistent. We had some good moments with Ava Heiden, Taylor Stremlow, Teagan Mallegni and Aaliyah Guyton. But the wait for them to consistently produce lasted through the season - you just never knew what you were going to get, game in and game out. And too often, they still played the part of "freshmen" where the stage seemed almost too big for them. Although there is a rumor that Guyton may not be back, the rest of them are talented enough that some good off-season work should make a huge difference. If so, we have three exciting years ahead of us;

++The (what will now be) Sr's. need to become the key leaders and players on and off the court: Kylie Feuerbach gave us good news with her return, and a preview of upcoming attractions with her play in the late season and post-season. We will need that consistently next year. Meanwhile, very likely, Hannah Stuelke's off-season knee surgery kept her from making any kind of off-season jump going into this past season. Now we need it to happen. Anyone who thinks she was even close to the player she was in 2023-'24 was not paying attention. But no matter where she plays, she must become the dominant player Caitlin Clark herself predicted she would be. At the same time, we have watched two Miss Nebraska basketball players put up fantastic years for the Nebraska Cornhuskers the last two seasons. Meanwhile, our wait for the one we got from Fremont, Nebraska to become a feared terror on the court - Taylor McCabe - continues. She did make some progress and her ballhandling is better. But her lack of ANY statistics against Oklahoma is beyond discouraging. She has to be a difference maker every single game now - somehow. Finally, while I made a fool of myself predicting that Jada Gyamfi could become the next Kate Martin, we need her to do all of her talking with her game. Putting in a Summer of Summers may still go some distance to allowing her to be a good addition to the team.

++Keep focusing on developing a top-notch point guard. Whether it is our incoming recruit or continued development with what we have, or even through the transfer portal, though it seems that lock-down post play (such as played by UCLA and Oklahoma) would be the way to get to the top, our success has shown that elite guard play is what can make a huge difference. Admittedly, you just can't snap your finger and here comes elite guard play. But Clark and then Olsen showed us just how far that could really go. Honestly, this year, we are not much of a team without Olsen.

++Ride the Caitlin Clark factor for as long as we can. The USC game showed what Iowa can still be - and we used that game to bring in several top recruits. While recruiting is unpredictable, as long as we can associate Iowa with Clark, maybe some more top recruits (like top recruit prospect Harpring from Georgia, who was visiting on USC day) will want to make Iowa their chance to become the next Clark.

Ultimately, what will next season look like? Well, we thought that Ava Jones was going to become a huge part of this team. Life happens - so do injuries - so do transfers and NIL realities. As long as we can stay healthy and manage those other areas, we may have more REALLY REALLY good Hawkeye women's basketball in our future.

Kylie will be energy leader (along with Stremlow) next season. Stremlow is a bulldog (like Syd) and will be a solid inside / outside / pg threat.

Hannah and Ava will be stat leaders and Jan will be in her element creating offense that runs thru the bigs. I think the Hannah at 4 project continues but have minimal hope for its success. Hope staff doesn't wait too long (like this year) to recognize that's a square peg in a round hole.

Hope Mallegni makes IQ progress but see her cap being like Warnock. Solid - sometimes go to, even - but equally frustrating.

Guyton is x-factor. Maybe gets pushed to have some IQ / tempered moxie with the 5-star guard coming in.

A lot of youth have to dramatically improve against Big 10 competition so see the NCAA streak ending next year with a 17-13 type record.

When current are Jrs, Hawks will be back to sweet 16 talk.

In MBB I've always thought they improved most between their freshman and sophomore years. If that holds true for us our frosh could take a big leap forward next year. I think they all could've done more this year if asked but they weren't really asked. I was happy that Coach Jan gave them as many minutes as she did, except for Callie Levine. We saw Heiden coming on, Stremlow shows great promise, Teegan should finally start making some shots and Guyton should improve. I hadn't heard Guyton might transfer. She a little small but lightning quick. She drove into trouble too often but surely can improve on that. She has teh pedigree to be great, I hope she stays and shows it. Not sure why Levine didn't play more. Is she just not good enough?

I feel the 3 incoming frosh could make a big impact. By all accounts, Addie Deal is the Real Deal. Just how Real is the question. If she could come at all close to resembling a CC, she could make a big difference next year. But we'll have to see on that. I like that Layla Hays, 6'5", is coming in from Alaska. Chances are she won't contribute that much but I hope she can get up to speed fast. After seeing the Oklahoma size i'm glad we'll have a 6'4" and 6'5" gals in the middle. OU showed us you can't have too much size. Hard to say what Journey will bring but I'm looking forward to it.

I'm thinking/hoping we could be pretty darn tough next year. They will be a year past CC the effect. Time to stand on their own.

And, maybe they find someone good in the portal.

So who is starting next year?

1. Strenlow.
2. McCabe
3. Fuererbach.
4. Stuelke
5. Heiden

Off the bench
1. Guyton
2. Malligni
3. Next year's freshmen

If 5-star recruit Addie Deal is as good as she is ranked, you got to figure she will be the starting point guard eventually for Iowa, right?

Either Guyton, a portal upperclassman, or Deal will be starting PG. I think Guyton needs a healthy off-season to make the jump from athletic to productive.

Yes, something was off with Guyton this year. She seemed to get worse at the end of the year instead of better. Maybe she was still hurt the whole year, not sure.

But Guyton needs to step up her performance next year otherwise her playing time is not going up.

Ada and Hannah on the floor together will be hard to stop

Addie Deal is a solid playmaker besides a scorer

We will be set for awhile now

She started the year injured so probably not in as good of condition as she would have been. Add to that most frosh hit a wall their first season with the demands of travel and improved competition.

think so as well. Her shot and legs kind of left her it seemed. A healthy off season and I expect she will be fine

Excuse me?? Are you talking McKenna Warnock?? You're joking, right. When I see the woman who was primarily responsible for Aliyah Boston in the famed South Carolina game absolutely shutting her down, then getting the game's biggest rebound to clinch the upset; when I see her scoring 21 points, including the clinching final four free throws, and the closing, critical rebounds - one offensive, one defensive - in the BTT semi-final barnburner against Maryland; when I see someone who made her living giving us 15 (pts.) and 10 (rebs.) - and we never lost when she did; when I see someone who generated the t-shirt "work like Warnock" and deserved every letter of it from her career at Iowa with all the things she did, admittedly many of them you may not see but were critical to our success - I DO NOT see someone who was frustrating. Bluntly, if Hannah Stuelke could only get to Warnock's level of talent in terms of outside shooting and defense, she would be a terror next season.

No, she was no Caitlin Clark but who was??? And for the first 2/3rd's of our first season without her, almost ALL of our struggles came from not having her do what she did so well. The ONLY way we get to the national finals two years in a row is not only having a Caitlin Clark, but having all the right people doing all the right things around her. During that first year, McKenna Warnock was as critical a cog to that as anyone was.

I will take a whole team of McKenna Warnocks any day.
