Trump supporters, how do you square this?

Because the Republicans listened to President Musk to nix the bill that would have paid these people and avoid the shutdown. President Musk and his assistant Donald Trump want to eliminate the debt ceiling so they can give themselves and their rich buddies a huge tax break.
I get how tax breaks for the rich can add to the deficit. My question was how does shutting down the government, saving billions in paid wages, add to the deficit?

That damage is done through suppression of economic growth. Likely fairly minimal if it is a short shutdown, but damage grows the longer things go:

Per the article it can have a very minimal effect on the economy. But I'm not sure that translates to a spike in the deficit. Especially considering all the money saved by shutting down would offset any negative impact a minimal economic decline would cause.

Also per the article. All the scare tactics of lost social security and soldiers not getting paid is BS.

So what seems to have happened is Musk disclosed on X all the stupid shit that's in the bill and caused an uproar that pressured congress to kill it. I think we can all agree that with Musk's ability to influence, it would be really bad if he was lying about whats in the bill. My question is, what if he tells the truth? If he just relays the info that's in the bill, that people wouldn't know otherwise, and then people make their voices heard, is that still a bad thing? Or is it just transparency?

So back to this. Congress has been waiting until the last minute to pass a spending bill so they can push shit through that would otherwise have no chance of being passed long before Trump and Elon. What a shady way to do it, and both sides are equally responsible. Just pure corruption. It's pretty funny that Massie called it out in advance and they still did it. Just no shame at all. And if it wasn't for my man crush Elon (that one's for you Fry) there would have been no accountability.

Now we see why Trump and repubs had to "pull out" of the Matt Gaetz support for Atty General. These are the people with the largest voices in the GOP. Well, at least ol' Matt USED to have a voice. Good bye, creeper.

The committee concluded in its bombshell document that Gaetz violated Florida state laws, including the state’s statutory rape law, as the GOP-led panel chose to take the rare step of releasing a report about a former member who resigned from Congress.

“The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress,” panel investigators wrote.

Nice to see someone held accountable. Sadly, this is a rare event. Also, we have observed the lack of concern by many politicians and the general public when violence against women has been, apparently, acceptable.

When no one is ever held accountable, and then someone finally is, there are three options to what happened. One is that is the first person who ever got caught committing a crime. Two is that person did commit the crime but he was someone who they wanted to get rid of. Three is he was charged with a crime he didn't even commit. I think we all know it's not number one.

What is amazing is how many people in Congress, and in the MAGA movement actively tried to cover this up and sweep it under the rug.

Unfortunately even tho that was actual video of a congressional hearing, it was on X. So that means X was the source, not the hearing itself.

Or his crimes were so reprehensible (statutory rape) that everyone, for their own self-interest, wanted to distance themselves from him.

You seem to think everything is a conspiracy. It seemed to be fairly widely known that he'd done some really crappy, illegal, gross stuff. It's being released now but even others in his gross little caucus (MTG) seemed to distance themselves from him recently. They knew and didn't want to have the stink attached to them.

Maybe he's just an a hole who committed statutory rape and who wouldn't want to get rid of that guy (besides Trump, who seems to have similar character pathology).

Could be. But if that's the case, Huck's comment "finally someone is being held accountable" wouldn't make sense either. That comment also insinuates most crimes by politicians get swept under the rug. I kinda assumed most people agree with that. Obviously you don't. Huck and I obviously do.

Both parties and most corporations do this. It's extremely naive to claim its a MAGA thing.

I also am hopeful it becomes politically taboo to cover up.

I couldn't agree more with your last sentence. If Trump and Gaetz are just the beginning of politicians being held accountable, I couldn't be happier. I have serious doubts tho. Especially because of the crimes Trump is being prosecuted for. Westernhawkbrings up a good point that Gaetz's crimes are bad enough to not overlook (even tho I'm sure plenty of past crimes by other politicians were much worse and overlooked) . But Trump's crimes? Those aren't really "time to break the ice on holding politicians accountable" crimes.

Americans fail to see context these days. Statutory rape? That's a big deal. Not all crimes are the same.

Your guy had over 30 felonies and is now the Vice President. :)

I know where this is going to go, but it has to be said....

Trump has over 25 sexual misconduct allegations, including being convicted of one of those and the rest just swept under the rug.

Ivana even said it was rape. Epstein and his island. "Grab them by the !!!!!" Miss Teen pageants.......

Why hasn't Trump ever been held accountable for all of that???

Can't wait for the excuse, because he's just as terrible as Gaetz, if not worse

Drumpf famously said he could shoot a person on 6th avenue in NYC and his supporters would still support him. Dammit, he was right!

It's extremely unlikely, in my mind, that Donnie is anywhere near a good guy in terms of his sexually assaultive behavior. But again, he IS the Vice President.

Donnie will never ever be held to account for anything, sadly. Unless his boss turns on him.
