Heartbreak...

If there was games that you can change the result to which would it be? Now this part will be a different, don't choose games just because they directly reflect the standings. Just a weird game that messed you up with how we lost.

A couple rules obviously the game had to be close towards the end..no NCAA or Big Ten games...like I said don't choose games to change our position in the standings. I'm going to do one for Alford, Lick, and Fran. I'm a little too young to get strong memories from Mr. Davis's games. I remember games, especially the Sweet 16 just not in depth memories. Feel free to do as many as you want as long as you space games out a little.

My Steve Alford game was a game that happened early in his tenure. A couple years after our Sweet 16 appearance we seemed headed for something special with Oliver, Evans, and Recker. Early in the year we just got done beating DeJaun Wagner and Memphis to advance to the title game in the Guardians Classic. We were ranked 9th and we played 5th ranked Mizzou. We ended up losing on a free throw with a second left. I was devastated we let our lead slip away right at the end. Oddly enough we actually played Mizzou a month later while they were #2 and we destroyed them, but that first one stung so bad at the time. My Lickliter game was the Big Ten Opener @ Ohio St coming off a good non conference start, 10-3, Iowa had a chance to prove they could be an improved team. This game was also Gatens first Big Ten and he played well with 22 points. After being down 8 at half Iowa tied it early in the 2nd half. Then Ohio st would grab a lead Iowa would tie, eventually Iowa would get the lead multiple times. But Ohio St held only a 2 point lead with only 2 and 1/2 minutes left Iowa never scored again and Ohio St ended up winning by 3. This loss hurt because it was year two under Lick strong non conference start and to come out and win @ Ohio St would've been huge. Our next game we beat Indiana the we were beating Minnesota at home in the first half and Cyrus Tate got hurt. I feel like that loss of Tate really hurt that team and we could've been better that season but we'll never know. Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Ohio State Buckeyes - Recap - December 31, 2008 - ESPN

My Fran game was in his first season, the easy game to go with would be our close loss vs #2 Ohio State but I was actually happy with that game even with the loss. Later down the line I wanted the upset vs Wisconsin. We led this game at half, went back in forth mid way through the 2nd, and got a lead to 8 late. Eventually we were up 2 then with 33 seconds Jordan Taylor tied it and Cartwright missed a shot at the game winner, brutal. We headed to OT, Taylor makes a quick 3 but we fought back and grabbed the lead, the freaking Tim Jarmusz makes a killer 3. After Taylor splits Ft's Bryce misses a chance to send it to 2OT. Then we had to watch Bo celebrate. Wisconsin Badgers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes - Play by Play - February 09, 2011 - ESPN

Those are just a few games that were really irritating to lose. Any that stand out to you?

The unholy foursome:

Iowa vs. San Francisco, 1956

Iowa vs. Jacksonville, 1970

Iowa vs. Louisville, 1980

Iowa vs. UNLV, 1987

I'm old enough to remember only the last, but each of these losses ripples through the tortured soul of every Iowa basketball fan whether they know it or not.

Teh OP says no B1G or NCAA games and then he names two B1G games in his answer and the first person to respond names all NCAA tourney games. GREAT THREAD GUYS!!!!

I'm thankful Lick lost that OSU game or it might have altered the space / time continuum and we'd still have Lick as coach.

I'm not going to follow the rules.

My Mr. Davis game would probably be the Minnesota game when Woolridge was a senior. Losing at home when a win would have tied us for 1st(at the time) in the conference. Still feel that Woolridge was the MVP of the league that year.

My Alford game would probably be the game at Northwestern when they hit that crazy 3 point shot to send the game into overtime. Ball bounced a couple of times and then just sorta hung on the rim til it finally fell through.

I've wiped all of the Lickliter games from my memory so can't answer for his era.

I break the rules as well. Losing to Northwestern State as a #3 seed makes me want to puke every time I think about it.

My Alford game was probably later that year when we played Duke at the UC. They kicked our *** and reality set in, for me at least, that maybe we weren't final four good. I didn't realize that the year would be that big of a disaster.

My Lickliter game was when we got lit up by Drake on the road. We had just blown out Iowa State at home and I was really thinking that things were starting to go our way, than Drake beat us badly and I knew this wasn't true.

Fran's game would be the Campbell game.

Overall program changers that I wish we could have back would be, not having Recker's knee break and not having Pierre Pierce be a scumbag.

1956--I was 10 years old and idolized every member of the fab 5. Bill Russel kept swatting away Hawk shots and I kept screaming goal tending. My Dad threatened to send me to my room if I didn't shut up. After the game I went to bed, pulled the covers over my head, and cried myself to sleep. The big man broke my heart that night--he broke my heart.--Bo

Damn Jon, you are an old fart!

I was a senior at Iowa in 1987. I think JD was still in high school at the time.

We're not old. You're just a no0b who prolly started rooting for the Hokks in 2002.

No Big Ten or NCAA games? Ok, well that doesn't leave much.

Ok, here goes.. It's a shame we lost to Duquesne that one year under Lick, Campbell last year... That exhibition loss to Marathon Oil back in '96 kinda sucked. Guess I'll throw our first loss against UNI back in 1989 in there. Or losing to a bad UNI team in 2001 when we were ranked Top 10.. There's my Davis/Alford/Lick/Fran list.

My REAL list:

1987 against UNLV easily is my #1 heartbreak game. Or the game against NWST in 2006 may take 2nd place.

Conference games that come to mind - Andy Kaufmann's desperation 3 to beat us in Champaign in 1993. 3 straight losses at the buzzer in East Lansing from 1994-96 (and pretty much every game up there since then).

Or how about the 1995 NIT game where PSU beat us at the buzzer with a 3 to end our season.

It's easy to come up with games where we've been beaten at the buzzer by a 3. The list goes on and on.

Naw, 1999 the year we hired a coach to take us to "the next level".

Good list. I'd forgotten about most games from the Lickliter era.. Those 3 years are just a haze to me. But I remember that Drake game. And yes, talk about a disappointing game that I'd forgotten about. Thanks for picking off that scab and getting it to bleed again bcl! :p

1980 Louisville in Final 4. What could have been.

The OU game in 87 was bad enough, but with a new coach and players that weren't as likeable as the 80 team....that's why I rank 80 over 87. The 87 team was plain out talented with a whole bunch of NBA players on it. 80 was a bunch of over achievers...Lester fighting through injury. Waite playing beyond his ability. Special K the work horse. Boyle...what can you say. Huge over achiever. Brookins fighting through a near fatal wound as a teenager and coming from a tough back ground. The ever likeable KA. Local favorites Mark Gannon, Wait, and Bobby H.. Even Greg Boyle who never hardly played...fighting through his knee injuries.

Not dissing 87, so pls don't accuse. 80 was special.

Winner....I'll also throw in our loss to Ohio State during the 1986/87 season which stopped the season -beginning 18-game winning streak.

1. 1987 UNLV - Last time I cried over a sporting event.

2. Ricky Davis declaring for the 1998 NBA draft. The thought of him added to the 1998-1999 roster that went to the Sweet 16 is pretty painful.

I actually graduated college that same day. My sister almost bought me tickets for my grad present. Glad she didn't.

Also, I was born in 1986, I wish I had the heartbreak on an elite 8 loss. Of course, if it feels anything like the Northwestern State kick in the nuts did, maybe not.
