Attention Dish Network Subscribers RE: BTN

I just got an email that the BTN and Dish are in a disagreement over carriage terms of the channel. The channel could be dropped from Dish on September 1st. This would mean an immediate call to DirecTV for me so just wanted to spread the word to others.

From the email:

Attention DISH Network customers and BTN fans,

DISH Network may drop Big Ten Network from its programming line-up. This means starting Saturday, September 1, DISH Network customers could miss over 40 BTN football games this season. DISH customers could miss the first games of the season for 12th-ranked Wisconsin, Indiana, Purdue and Urban Meyer's coaching debut with Ohio State.

DISH customers would also lose access to BTN2Go, a LIVE, 24/7 viewing experience available on computers, tablets and smartphones, with live games, extra football game channels, on-demand programming, and historical events.

Dish's DVRs and my now huge library of movies, games and shows on my DVR and external hard drive make it very hard for me to switch providers, but losing this channel would make me switch providers.

Typical Dish Network, another reason Directv is better. Anyone who is interested in switching to Directv and wants to make $100 send me a message. We would each get $10 off our bill for 10 months for "refer a friend" bonus.

This will get resolved. A lot of people want this channel. AMC most people can live with out. As far as the Pro-DTV people the Viacom dispute says hi.

It goes on with all the providers

Same! Message me too if want it. It's a free 100 dollars off

As far as Viacom and dtv, It was resolved, not amc

That dispute got resolved and in favor of DirectTV. But you are right, it goes on with all providers and I think will eventually lead to a la carte program offerings as retransmission fees and in turn our cable/satellite bills continue to skyrocket.

Yes you are correct. Not the point though. It happens all the time and will happen to DTV again. I'd even venture to guess more people missed Comedy Central,Nickelodeon, and MTV for those 2 week then people who have and are missing AMC for the last 2 months.

Per customer service chat @ Dish:

"We are not dropping the Big Ten Network." "We do not have information that this channel will be removed from our channel line up."

Of course a customer service rep at Dish will say that, they don't want you to think they are dropping it and then have you switch cable providers.

Here is an article from the Columbus Dispatch about it.

The five-year contract between BTN and Dish signed five years ago when the BTN was launched expires Aug. 31.BTN vice president Elizabeth Conlisk said negotiations are ongoing, “but we felt it important to alert fans of this possibility.

“We have offered proposals that are consistent with current market value for network. Dish is looking at preferential treatment and looking at terms that are significantly below market value.”

A Dish spokesman, John Hall, said he was not immediately prepared to comment.

So the B1G wants to raise rates, and Dish is fighting it. Somehow this is Dish's fault?

I didn't say it was Dish's fault and I don't care who's fault it is but it better be corrected by Sept 1st. There is a very good chance that after this weekend Iowa's next 4 games are on the BTN.

This part of that article makes it sound to me they aren't close to an agreement either.

Dish is looking at preferential treatment and looking at terms that are significantly below market value.â€￾

I guess it all depends if Dish feels like ******* off 18% of their subscribers (2.5/14). Or if 18% is a low enough number to where Dish has the leverage.

When someone else mentioned chatting with Dish Customer Service, I decided to give that a shot, too. Here is what I found out:

Bhargava (ID: D52): Hello Mike. How are you doing today?
chat_enduser_message.png
Mike: I'm just curious how serious this Dish Network/Big Ten Network spat is...should I be concerned I will not get to see big ten college football this Saturday? In other words, should I be calling another provider?
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): I'd be glad to help you with the programming.
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): Mike, I see that the Big Ten Network is available on your account.
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): Can you please tell me which game are you looking for?
chat_enduser_message.png
Mike: I just read where the Big Ten Network and Dish are at an impasse, and it could mean that Dish removed it from their lineup on Sep. 1

Bhargava (ID: D52): Let me check the updates.
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): Thank you for your patience.
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): Mike, please don't believe such kind of rumors.
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): There's no update with us that we are removing the Big Ten Network.
chat_enduser_message.png
Mike: This was posted on a local newspaper site, I can get a link if you wish
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause but we are not removing it.
chat_agent.png
Bhargava (ID: D52): That is a false update.

Bhargava (ID: D52): Please don't believe it.

It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, happens this week. Dish as of now does not see it as an issue apparently.

Just stream the game on your laptop and then hook an HDMI cable up from the TV to the computer and watch it on your TV.
