will fran redshirt any of the freshman?

The last few games, yeah. He's done what he's supposed to. Rebound, block shots and run the floor. I think he is giving effort and his attitude has been outstanding.

So you think that a junior who has started almost every game of his career and still comes off the bench for at least 20 minutes every game will be unseated by a freshman next year?

Well if it follows the progression of Mel's career so far, then yes. He went from starting as a freshman to being a back up as a sophomore, is it really that crazy to think he will continue to lose minutes next year? Mel has no real offensive skills other than getting put backs and energy plays, if he's not bringing a high energy game off the bench he's really going to struggle to find minutes.

If Mel plays next year like he has played this year he will be coming off the bench and losing minutes(although I think he will play better). However, the OP presents a good question as to where the minutes are going to go next year. It is a good problem to have. I dont think that anyone redshirts next year, but I am very interested in who gets all of the minutes. we essentially have 4-5 players that could come in and get significant time. This years team already has two of last years starters coming off the bench. The only thing I am certain of next year is that Dev will start, after that, it would just be speculating. I do think that White and Woodbury will start as well, but its possible they come off the bench. We shall see. I would like to see

Gessell, Dev, White, Basabe, Woodbury. With McCabe, May, Meyer, Ogelsby, and Ingram coming off the bench. It would nice to see Olaseni's game improve to the point where he could be a difference maker on D and on the glass consitently as well. If not, he will log about the same amount of minutes.

I would say, if Meyer shows he's able to contribute early in the season, Gabe may get an extra year to develop. Wouldn't a redshirt out of the incoming class balance the classes out? I'm not sure anyone will redshirt, but Gabe may benefit the most from it.

From everything I've read Meyer will be ready right out of the gate like White so I agree if anyone why not Gabe? He certainly doesn't appear to be ready yet. Now maybe that will change but we are almost through the season.

Meyer would be the most logical candidate. We have 5 kids coming in as freshman. Only 2 scholarships for the next class. Redshirting Meyer balances things a little. Plus, Meyer is going to be competing with McCabe, White, Basabe, Woodbury, and Gabe O for minutes. Basabe, White, and McCabe are all proven guys who will take 20-30 minutes a piece as post players. Assuming Gabe makes some progression and Woodbury comes as advertised defensively and rebounding they are going to eat up the remaining minutes. Those guys are all around until his junior year.

Can't redshirt Gabe because that puts 6 kids in one class. Plus Gabe may never be more than a defensive role player. I think the key is whether Meyer shows enough potential to warrant a fifth year of scholarship. I wouldn't redshirt Gabe because I'm not sure he is ever more than a role player. Better to turn that scholarship over (see J.R. Angle). Meyer may have the potential to be a versatile post player. Wisconsin redshirts these kind of kids all of the time.

Pushing Meyer back a class, then bringing in a couple wings in 2013 really balances the team. By Meyer's sophomore year, there will be a major need for him.

I don't think Fran would have brought Gabe in just to use up the scholarship. This wasn't a move a la Licklighter bringing in Archie. I think Fran feels Gabe is worth his time, which means he'll end up as a contributor. The only real draw-back to redshirting Gabe is having 6 players in one class. But, if (big IF) Fran gets the recruiting really rolling, 6 in a class won't matter near as much.

I don't think anyone of those guys have guaranteed minutes for next year. Fran has already proven with Basabe that if you don't produce, you won't see the court as much. I think Fran will go into next year with an open competition for minutes. If Meyer is the best we have, then he will see the floor more than Basabe or McCabe.

Just curious how many people with such strong opinions have seen Meyer play in person? I hope you guys are right but this seems like classic message boarding

I also don't think some fans appreciate how fast Fran wants to go depth would be good thing

I agree with this. My opinion on Gabe has only to with his potential and what an extra year could do for him. It has nothing to do with Fran's rotation and speed of the game.

I'd agree with you. If Meyer is better than White, Basabe, or McCabe then surely play him. I was operating on the assumption he is not as a freshman. Experience matters in the Big 10 basketball. If it seems clear he is decently talented, but is going to get negligible minutes behind those guys I think he is a decent fit for a redshirt. We'd get 3 big minute years out of him instead of 2. It also looks like we won't take a big in the next class. Meaning if we don't redshirt him, then during his and Woodbury senior year, our backup bigs will all be freshman or sophomores.

White is a freshman this year, and has been considerably better than Basabe this year. Experience is nice to have but talent matters most. I don't know how good Meyer is going to be, but I can't see Fran redshirting him. This isn't football, if you're good enough to play, you will see the floor right away. I think Fran wants all the talent he has available to him right away,

I think there is only one freshman that won't even be considered for a redshirt and that is Gesell.

Here is what I think could happen, not to say it will at all.

Three players get redshirted...Clemmons, Meyer and Olaseni.

1. Here is how it would balance out. Marble/McCabe/Basabe, White/Oglesby, Gesell/Woodbury/Ingram/Olaseni, Clemmons/Meyer/Wing/Wing.
2. White is the wild card with the fact that he can play the 3-5, if he keeps growing that could continue to change things.
3. Oglesby is going to breakout next season and he will be able to play 2 or 3. May can move to a more natural 2 spot as well, more for defense than anything. Ingram will be needed here as well, just in case Oglesby struggles.
4. If Gesell is as good as what I have seen, well, there is no need to keep three people splitting time at PG. Yes, I do think Marble will play PG next year, only until Gesell is comfortable and when Gesell is off the floor.
5. Olaseni needs a year, I think Fran was hoping to get more out of him this year, he sorta hinted at it in the Friday presser, not just him Brommer and Archie too.
6. Meyer is a kid that has said himself that he needs to improve his conditioning, let him do that for a season while practicing against good players too.
7. Iowa cannot afford to redshirt Woodbury, Iowa has to have his size in the rotation. With his size alone, he can take some pressure off of the 4-spot and occupy space, while being an opportunistic scorer.

In the end, it is nice option to have and we'll see if Fran utilzes that option for any players that could use a year. Also, if any injuries happen and a freshman has to be redshirted, it isn't the end of the world.

Who knows? The first game is nine months away. Anything can happen. Somebody can break an ankle, blow-out a knee, transfer, flunk-out, etc.

Fran might not redshirt anyone. He could want the incoming class to get as much game experience as possible. Look what a year of experience did for Devyn and Zach. If that holds true for the new recruits, we will have a lot of talent on the floor when Marble, McCabe and Melsohn are seniors. We should be capable of making waves then and perhaps be a force to be reckoned with.

Fran might not be as impatient as the rest of us, but I do believe he wants to get there as quickly and judiciously as possible.....

Sure is good to see the enthusiasm surrounded the program now.....

:)

He should have been unseated this season the way he has played so far. Wouldn't be that much of a loss.

From day one Olaseni will #3 behind Meyer and Woodbury simply because of his lack of experence. The positive here is that instead of practicing against Archie, Brommer and Basabe, Olaseni will be going up against two "better" players, which will only accelerate his development.

It will be interesting to see how McCaffrey uses all the guys at 4&5 spots and it wouldn't surprise me to see 3 guards with Marble and a big on the floor against the smaller, quicker teams.

Imo, the only player that may end up rs would be Olesani. The extra year would really be beneficial to him experience wise. Meyer is way to good to rs. Basabe may end up as the odd man out given his current limited offensive skills vs the other big men he will be fighting for playing time next year.
