Crazy Thought for 2011: McNutt to QB

McNutt is big, mobile, strong and fast. He can run. He can pass. Do you move him to QB and run the Auburn offense? Our offensive line should be better next year.

I really think he could be an effective QB. If you wanted to change the offense, this might be the type of athlete you could use to accomplish the change.

Just a crazy thought.

That is a crazy thought to take an AC WR and move him to QB. Do we have a similar talent at another position to move to WR or does it not matter?

You are joking right? It amazes me how everyone just wants to be the copycat to the new 'hot-thing'.

No, I'm not joking. It may be a dumb idea (that is why I'm asking) but I'm not joking.

You can recruit WRs. Heck, we had two great ones this year but couldn't seem to get the ball to them enough.

McNutt is a special athlete; if he plays QB he touches the ball on every play.

Let me ask it a different way: Would Cam Newton play QB if he was at Iowa or would he be switched to a different position?

I'm not knocking the staff in any way; just wondering if you could build an offense around McNutt.

McNutt doesn't get enough touches.

Vandenberg possibly could put up Stanzi like numbers next season. From his limited exposure last season and the few reps he got this season, he has shown a pretty firm grasp on the offense. He really makes decisions fast. I think Marvin knows his money is coming from catching passes, not throwing them.

No offense but this is a dumb idea, there is a reason he is playing WR and not QB

McNutt is not Cam Newton

It sure would be nice to have a mobile QB who is a threat to run.

You are not going to have that next year (again).

Look how it works for Ohio State and Auburn. Heck, you could run OUR offense with a mobile QB. We did it with Brad Banks.

As a compromise, why not run McNutt out of the wildcat (not on every down, but to switch things up).

My point is that you have to get him more touches next year.

Right, but Pryor can't throw the ball to save his life.

fantasy land called and they want your idea back.

I get your point though. It would be nice to have a mobile QB. The team under Banks was a joy to watch.

KOK run the wildcat? lol. We are lucky we get to see and end around. I agree he does need more touches, but this offensive scheme is all about spreading the ball around. If you want to be an All-American WR, don't come to Iowa. You won't get the ball enough.

We're in a BCS bowl this year with Pryor as our QB, I really believe that. He is that good.

He isn't a great passer but he is plenty good enough. College football is being dominated right now by mobile QBs and has been for several years.

I think that is why our offense is bogging down; we are playing QBs who are no threat to run.

Somehow McNutt must get the ball more next year, assuming he returns and he is healthy for the entire season. How is that accomplished?

Good question. Throwing him the ball more? lol.
You look at his numbers from this year: 8 TD's and 798 yards. So.....can we expect him to break the 1000 yard and 10 TD mark? It all depends on Vandy and their chemistry as well as the offensive scheme. You would think the coaches would realize that with his talent level, he needs to have the ball as much as possible, but at Iowa....you never know what they are thinking sometimes.

Between our two star WR's, DJK would be the one I'd want at QB (if I were forced to choose one). McNutt didn't look good at all throwing the ball his freshman year, and he could be a dominating WR. Vandenberg has serious tools for the QB position. That's a match made in Hawkeye Heaven.

Although I am firmly in the "I love Captain Kirk unconditionally camp", I had the sinking feeling this year that we squandered DJK and "7 Gets 6", similar to the failure in 1997 to get Tim Dwight more touches.

One thing you have to admire about Auburn's offense is they clearly understand that it is imperative that Newton get the maximum number of touches.

I think the more important question is who emerges as the slot. We are losing three of our top five receivers in DJK, Sandeman, and Chaney. I am hoping that either KMM or Shumpert emerge early in the spring along with Cotton. Also you have a couple of walk ons in the mix in Hurt and Staggs plus incoming freshman. So the only known quantities are McNutt and Davis. That is scary and one more reason that is foolish to consider moving McNutt- especially when you consider how talented Vandenberg could be.
