New Kickoff Rule

I don't like the kickoff rule because it wipes out a huge amount of variability related to gamesmanship by kickers and receivers. Pretty much anything kicked passed the 25 can be brought back to the 25. I love when a receiver has to decide whether to catch it or not at the 10. I suppose they still can decide to catch and run, but I could see a lot of coaches putting steady handed buys back there to catch with no intention of running, especially against better kickers. Moves the gamesmanship to the decisions of the coaches, not the play on the field.

And I expect the 40 second clock after a TD will result in a lot of penalties at important points in games.

i don't understand what the point is. if your kicker can't end zone it, why the hell would you fair catch it in the field of play (inside the 25 yard line?) I mean, even at end of game you just catch it and down it. I just don't see what the purpose is. Would you want your KR to fair catch a kick off at the 5, 10, 15 or 20 yard lines?

Agreed. Trying to fix what isn't broken.

Won’t change the game. Kickoffs are stupid anyway. Even without the rule, if I’m a coach my kicker better end zone it every time unless he’s in an ungodly wind. I’ll happily play D at the opposing 25 every time if it means won’t have a ball brought near my half of the field all year.

They're heading towards doing away with kickoffs entirely and just starting at the 25. Should have never messed with the kickoff and just left the 20 yardline.

...and one of those coaches rhymes with Firk Kerentz.

The fair catch has always been an option when a kickoff is in the field of play.

I do not like this rule because when a coach asks his kicker to kick a shorter, higher kickoff down to the 5 yard line that is a skill and a good way to try to pin your opponent down closer to their defensive goal line,.

This rule is for safety but it takes away a strategic play by coaches.

It'll be interesting to see how often teams choose to take the fair catch. I imagine we might see more upperclassmen returning kicks like we see with punt returners.

I think they are half assing the rule they want to and eventually will end up passing and that's outlawing kickoffs all together. This is dumb. Being able to fair catch the ball at the 5 and you now get it at the 25.... Why even go through the dog and pony show of having kickoffs then. So are teams going to start squibbing/kicking them low so they bounce before getting to the returner? That's what I'd do. Get those returners fielding ground balls at the 8 and being able to pin them inside the 25 would be worth it.

but its the flip side of your argument that makes the kickoff so exciting. It is the only play that allows the ball carrier to use the space of the entire field. there are open lanes potentially everywhere. The safety of players, I would agree, should be considered. but this new rule doesn't do anything, in my opinion.

Harbaugh will figure out the perfect way to play the new rule.

I get your point 100% but I feel the whole point is moot. It’s a super low percentage play to try and drop it at the 5 on kickoffs. That’s why you see the vast majority go through the end zone on the fly. Punts? Definitely.

With today’s athletes, if you don’t have a kicker who can end zone it every time you messed up.

Just what we need, another lowly rule that pussifies the game even more while adding undue complexity.

Dumb rule changes = football's death by a thousand cuts.

This is the next step to the ultimate elimination of the kickoff. Some time ago, in one game, one guy got hurt returning a kick. So, the best way to prevent that from happening ever, ever again is to do away with it.

True but that's another thing they could do to pretty much eliminate the KOs. Move where they kick off from closer making it almost automatic that every single kicker is putting it 5 yards deep or more every time. What they want to do is eliminate KOs all together which this sorta will do. The amount of returns we are going to see will go down even more than what they've already been the last few years.
