Let's talk hoops

I think he was starting at the beginning of the year - when half the games weren't televised.

I wouldn't put too much thought into his numbers as a starter compared to a bench player if that's the case. He's the type of kid that gets better as the season goes on.

Did he do that last year some? Leave guys in foul trouble on the bench to start 2nd halves I mean? I think that's a good idea depending on the foul situation and player involved. We are so deep in the front court I feel go with the hot hands and run with them as much as possible. If Cook, Wagner or Pemsl fouls out with 5 mins to go or so so what? I have faith in the other guys, there just isn't that much of a drop off.
The jab there is that Fran would pull a player with two fouls in the 1H, no matter how much time was left in the half, and never put them back in.

Many disagree with this strategy as it may keep your best players from getting in a rhythm. Also when you have a team that prides itself in depth it makes less sense.

But to answer your question because they only had two fouls (he never put them in with a chance to get a 3rd) then yes they started the second. I would argue in certain cases you need to leave your better players out there. If they do pick up a 3rd I would say someone like Baer or Pemsl could start the 2nd.

Yeah I guess it's just so situational to me. It shouldn't be some cookie cutter cut and dry policy of if you get 2 fouls in the first 10 mins of the first half your out till the 2nd half no matter what. That guarantees your player will have no rhythm at all pretty much. It's just different if a JBo gets in early foul trouble to me compared to a Cook. I'd rather let Cook keep playing (unless he's playing bad on top of that) In JBos case we pretty much need him to hang around for the end of games so do what's necessary with him.

If someone has heard about a "super secret scrimmage" is it really super secret?

well, they typically scrimmage another school from around the area - Creighton a few times, K State in the past. They don't release any stats or scores, but you typically get a lil details on how it went. It's fairly secret.

I agree the decision is not black or white. We can all agree we want Baer out there at the end of the game, it’s just a matter of how we get there.

Here are a couple more potential reasons to have Baer coming off the bench.

- Maybe due to his playing style, 24 minutes is really the most he should be out there. We certainly have the depth and other options to support that. Bring him in at 16 take him out at the under 8, then bring him back in with around 4 minutes in each half to close it out.

- Ball handling. If the idea is that Wagner is going to play 3 this year, I think we will have a ball handling issue if Wagner and Williams are on the court at the same time. Baer can help alleviate some pressure from Williams who as we know isn’t the best ball handling PG out there.

- There is also a school of thought out there that he is actually a more effective player when coming off the bench, and there could be something to that.

In 8 games starting he was:
6.75 PPG/ 39.5 FG%/ 34% 3P%/ 5.25 REB

His season averages were:
7.5PPG/ 49.6 FG%/ 39.4% 3P%/ 5.8 REB

Good points and it proves that the decision isn't black and white. It's probably too close to even have a right and wrong decision.

I will add tho that playing 24 minutes from the bench is probably the same as playing 28 as a starter. So the question is, is having Baer in for 4 more minutes per game worth not having the benefits of him coming off the bench?

Also, if he was really a better player off the bench last year (I'm not sure whether he was or not) it doesn't mean he will be better off the bench this year. He is a year older now and a team leader. He is more than likely a more confident player this year, so he may not need the benefit of playing off the bench.

I'll make this short and to the point. Most on here are sleeping on Pemsl!

Pemsl is a very good player. He may end up being the B1G 6th man of the year. Iowa doesn't beat WI w/o him last year. Maybe Garza can change this but last year Iowa was awful on D w both Pemsl and Cook in the game together. Starting them together is a problem without changing the 5 and I'm not sure who guards a 3 w Pemsl, Cook, and Garza out there.

I personally like Baer coming off the bench. He certainly deserves to start. He is the most complete player on the roster as evidenced by his stats last season, along with personal observation.....

Nicholas is a dangerous weapon coming off the bench. He usually contributes immediately, generally when the circumstances are dire. This is an invaluable factor in every basketball game. No one else on the team can contribute as thoroughly in every aspect when inserted onto the floor.....

It is a factor that creates psychological damage to the opponents, knowing that no matter how well they are playing or how poorly the Hawks are playing, Nicholas Baer Will enter the contest and create substantial damage.....

Merely a jaded personal opinion, nothing else.....

I think Pemsl would be a starter on all but a handful of Iowa teams in as long as I can remember. I still think it's possible he and Cook both start.
If he hadn't been hurt I think it would of been more possible. There is a reason Garza got the most minutes when they went overseas.

Just my opinion but people who think they are going to see some crazy jump in performance by Cordell due to his injury are in for a letdown.

If I recall he basically said the injury was mostly about managing the pain, it really wasn’t hindering his ability.

With that said he was a heck of a good player last year as a freshman and I expect that to continue whether he starts or comes off the bench. What a luxury it is to be talking about a guy who averaged 9/5 as a freshman as your 6th/7th man.

People always downplay injuries because they don't want to sound like they are making excuses. It's hard to play 100% while playing in pain.

I could see Kriener over Garza, particularly early in the season

Kriener and Pemsl are getting no respect so far. They both are extremely important players on this team, and will contribute throughout the season.....

I can see Kriener playing the 3 early on and he might just start at the beginning of the season. He is very tricky around the basket and has a nice fadeaway three, is quick, and seems to have progressed since last season. Watched him in the PTL and video of the European Trip, and he looks much more comfortable and skillful.....

Am anxious to see Cordell Pemsl play this season after playing injured all last season. He has incredible moves that make him almost unstoppable at times. D has to improve, and actually was toward the end last year. Cook, Garza and Kriener/Pemsl would be difficult to stop inside if everything is clicking. Wagner will contribute all season. He is a Beast around the basket, very strong and fearless. He is a presence in the paint, and will battle the opposing enforcers throughout the season.....

Really getting pumped for the season to start.....

We are not only paying no attention to Cordell, but Kriener

THIS!^^^^^^^^ People seem to forget how good Cordell was around the basket and Kriener from all over the floor! I am not downplaying the talent the freshmen have coming in but I believe experience matters!

Sure is fun trying to figure out who NOT to give minutes to versus the opposite! Can make a case for so many.

Gonna see big games from many different players this year. Like we have said so many times over the years now other teams will be saying "Who the hell is this guy having a career night against us? Never heard of him!"

Just because people are not predicting either of those two to start, doesn't mean there is disrespect involved. Garza has typical size & body for a 5, Kriener & Pemsl are more of a 4. If Kriener was 2 inches taller or if Pemsl showed more handles and/or deep ball, I'm sure some people would have them in their starting lineup predictions. I'm sure some people are hesitant on Pemsl due to the injury as well.

I like RK but he is not quick, and he imo is not capable of playing the 3 due to his lack of footspeed. In any case in that lineup Cook would certainly be considered the 3 before RK.

I liked what I saw from Kriener in the PTL but I actually still think there is a chance he is the odd man out again this year. He was behind Cook, Pemsl, and Wagner last year and they are all still around. We just brought in two bigs at 6’11 who have a couple of inches on RK. Kriener has certainly improved but if Garza is just flat out better, with their similar skill sets, minutes may be tough to come by for RK. Time will tell.
