The dirt follows Pearl to Auburn

I don't really understand the criminal element to this, but I'm certainly not surprised an agency not named NCAA discovered it before the NCAA did. Maybe the FBI should be investigating "money funneling" within the NCAA???

Bribery

Guess there's an FBI press conference at 11

I don't see how Pitino gets out of this shit again. First the stripper scandal from one of his assistants, and now another assistant was taking money from Adidas to funnel to players to get them to go there?

Ignorance is bliss Rick!

When did they start looking into this? This shit's been going on for at least 40 years lol.

I think I read that the FBI started investigating in 2015 and wiretapped the Adidas exec and caught him in the act.

Jay Bilas is going to have a field day with this

Well, if the NCAA doesn't care, why wouldn't he get away with it?

It's perfect for Pitino!

"Adidas paid for the strippers! I knew nothing! Those bastards!.... Oh, and remember, don't penalize us- think of the poor kids!"

I was thinking the same thing- seems more like NCAA violations than actual crimes.

But, what the hell- off with their heads!!

The FBI did seem to struggle to identify the victims in their press conference. In the end they stated that the schools are the victims as the players are claiming on their documents to be amateurs even though they've already been paid under the table by various entities.

If you read the indictments though its pretty clear that what they were doing was illegal.

I'm pretty sure it was former iowa coach George Ravelings job to spread Nike money around in a similar fashion at one time. (While working for Nike, long after he was done coaching)

One thing to consider is the FBI requires warrants/probable cause for much of their work, while the NCAA doesn't. The fact that the FBI finds this and not the NCAA shows that the NCAA is extremely complacent in its duties.

Very interesting point raised here that a majority of Hawk fans probably don't feel comfortable coming to grips with. I have the sense that coaches like Raveling who don't quite cut it at the D1 level find themselves well compensated with the shoe companies. Keep in mind that Raveling recommended our current assistant who has a similar background and a long career with Nike and the AAU when Fran went to him seeking advice on who to hire as his third assistant.

Not trying to throw anybody under the bus but just want our fans to realize that while we won't have anybody going to jail Iowa may not come out of this as squeaky clean as we would all like to think. This whole thing will spread well beyond the obvious suspects as people start to talk. It gave me pause when I read that Iowa's recruitment of Tyler Cook has received mention in some of the articles.

Inclined to agree with you except ... Louisville. Pitino is as greasy as a Jiffy Lube floor. But he has managed to skate all these years.

I sure hope Iowa's not involved but I'm not naive, with Fran's inability to spot but not land the big fish I'm hoping it's because he's clean not just the lowest bidder.

I'm no fan of the NCAA. The suck, and honestly they don't have any "teeth" and there isn't a school out there that is scared of them. Yet they don't have 1/100,000 of the power of the Federal government.

This all started with Marty Blazer, something the NCAA could have never had access to. Per a ESPN article: "This started with Marty Blaze, a former Pittsburgh financial adviser who was accused of swindling $2.35 million from five clients by the Securities and Exchange Commission and founded Blazer Capital Management, was accused of investing money into movies and entertainment ventures without his clients' knowledge between 2010 and 2012. As part of his plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's office, Blazer agreed to plead guilty to securities fraud, aggravated identity theft, false statements and documents, and two counts of wire fraud, according to the Sept. 19 cooperation agreement."

Lamont Evans was an assistant with Brad Underwood and Underwood tried hard to get him to Illinois.

He also was a part of the rise of KSU as was Underwood. No way these assistants operated independently.

Will be interesting to see how deep this goes. Back in the financial crisis the guys taking the fall were the assistants basically and not the big guys who actually went down. This in part led to the Equifax scandal where high level execs used the breach to profit on stock options. This is the biggest financial scandal in history.

These arrests could make things worse for basketball corruption if the assistants only take the fall.
