Hawk's play Germany All Stars at 1 PM today

I'm not going to make any sweeping conclusions here. This team they are playing isn't good. I'm not worried about the final score, Iowa is treating this like a scrimmage. Two teams of 5 playing about an equal amount.

The numbers I posted above are what the announcer read off. I'd trust the stats the basketball team twittered.

Germany doesn't appear to have much chemistry as expected, but the 40 year old retired lefty point guard that looks like he should be playing beer league softball is a heckuva player. I think he's as much a reason the German second teamers look better than their starters than anything Iowa second teamers have done particularly wrong. Garza has done some nice things of offense, but looks pretty slow on defense to me. He's scored 10 points but given up 8. Moss and Baer look really good on both ends thus far.

man... I can see that this isn't a great team but just watching the end of the 3rd and I can say a couple of things...

Connor would sure help this team
Nunge and Garza - uh, they look as good as advertised maybe I was selling them short
Ellingson ... he's gonna play.

Well, I did not expect to be able to watch an entire game at all today. What are some thoughts?

I watched the second half. Saw some highlight dunks from Nunge, Cook, Uhl, and Garza. Ellingson's release is super quick. Baer was his normal energizer self. Nunge didn't do much offensively but I thought he boxed out and played defense pretty well. Wagner wasn't involved much at all. Moss I think could easily be the second option behind Cook next year as a scorer.

My favorite part was early in the second half the other team was pressing and a guy was trying to get physical with JBo. JBo pushed the guy who was grabbing him before the inbounds. Then JBo get the inbound dribbles down and drills a deep three off a screen.

I watched the whole thing and had these random/crazy thoughts fly thru my brain:

- Iowa was just way better than the other team. The other team had never played together before and it showed.

- This game had better defense than the PTL, but the German team was still pretty lazy defensively

- Garza is the next Cody Zeller. Not really, but it went through my head and I'm not drunk, yet. He is quick on his feet for 6'10" and 240 pounds and has a knack for the ball. He already looks like a Big Ten center...at 18 years old.

- Moss is going to be a 2-guard we haven't seen in awhile. He can shoot or get to the rim.

- Connor was surprisingly good.

- I wasn't impressed with Uhl or Wagner. They're solid, they're athletic, but the other guys are just better players.

- This team is going to score a ton of points this year

Here were some of my thoughts.

-Spot on about the other team, they were pretty bad

-Was impressed with Garza. Willingly playing D, hustled, rebounded well, understood how to use his size, and got the ball in the basket on bunnies (this will get tougher as he will face much more athletic guys in the B1G). Still overall I was more impressed with him than I thought I would be. He isn't a finished product, and there will be lot of growing pains this year, but he has a good base to work with. He will undoubtedly get better and looks like he could have a high ceiling.

-Jordan, Moss, Baer, Cook all looked like what you figured they would look like. We will be solid with those 4 for sure

-Uhl and Wagner, they just didn't show me much. Both hustle, both can play D, but both are just offensive black holes, in that neither of them are effective scorers.

-Conner I just don't see him as a PG. Way too big, way to limited quickness wise to be a PG IMO.

-Ellingson was off shooting but he has a role on this team.

-That leaves Nunge. He was just ok today. He is not a 3, not at this stage of his career. I didn't see any explosiveness out of him, and his outside shot look pretty rough. I think he air-balled 1 or 2 shots. He does run the floor well though, looks to play willing D and he has all sorts of tools to work with.

Take these with a grain of salt. It was a glorified PTL game vs pretty bad competition, and I'm certainly not going to proclaim any absolutes from watching it.

I like what I saw from Garza in that he plays hard and mixes it up down low. I do think he was out of position a couple times on post defense and he is a little slower of foot, certainly not athletic like Zeller.

Again not to make sweeping generalizations based on a scrimmage but I kind of echo the sentiment on Wagner and Uhl. I think they are so similar in what they provide, athleticism, defense, rebounding, with limited offense, that it would make more sense to choose one and play them in a 15 minute role. Now I said that a few weeks back so I didn't just come to that conclusion as of today.

I guess it really doesn't matter because he's redshirting, but Connor's set shot is just begging to get blocked.

I listened to the first half while making dinner. What I saw didn't surprise me. The German All-Stars appeared to be more of a D-II school team. Therefore, the result didn't surprise me.

What I found entertaining was all the trivia the announcer knew about Iowa. He either did the home work himself or someone did it for him. Not that I didn't know most of it from this board, but it was still nice to hear.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

Gaza looks like he's been working with Doyle. Looks like he put on 20 pounds of muscle. He will be a starter at center. Liked his game didn't force anything just solid. He will be a force by midseason. Woodbury never seemed to put on muscle. Going out on a limb but got a feeling Garza will end up on the list of best centers in Iowa history. It's a short list, but Garza has the body and the right mental approach. Nudge showed flashes of potential. I see a small amount of minutes for several players. Wagner and Uhl gonna see a lot of benchtime. Conner looked actually better than I thought he would. If best players start this will be a solid team. Only weakness that still worries me is guard quickness and the ability of Iowa guards to guard good PG's. Overweight beer league PG was blowing by Iowa guards getting in the lane and setting up his team. Does that sound familiar? Where was Kreiner? Williams was limping and I think we were missing another guard. Did some players stay home?
