Jon Rothstein B1G Preview

Nunge is better than a lot of the freshman on that list, but who cares. People will learn about him soon enough.

I honestly think Minnesota and Northwestern may come back to earth some this year. Minnesota I don't think has enough 3pt shooting.

The interesting thing about the league this year is after MSU, 2 through probably 8, the league is wide open. Going to come down to matchups, winning close games, and getting hot at the right times.

I expect Minnesota to have a letdown year. Before last season they were so bad that Pitino was on the brink of being fired. I think the lofty expectations bring them back to reality this season.

Middle of the road, wow what a stretch to put Iowa where it usually finishes year, after year, after year in both basketball and football.

We follow the recruiting and get excited about the upcoming year and years after that. Then we finish some where around fourth to ninth place. Yet we fans carry on like we are title contenders every year with our enthusiasm. We Iowa fans deserve better than what we have been getting.

Mean while some of the coaches and the AD are filthy rich.

Here's the ($)million dollar($) question........... At what point does the fan base start to expect and demand more in both football and basketball??? I am all ears..............................

You're an idiot - Iowa basketball has finished top 5 or above for the last 4 seasons and every single one of those seasons were picked to finish worse. Iowa football won the West and went undefeated just 1 season ago. You can't help but think about how dumb you are.

Who did we beat that was a quality team the year we won the west and do you want to talk about the previous five years? MSU was the best BIG team we played that year and Bama wiped them off the map. Then there was Stanford. Obvious to anyone with any knowledge of college football knows the best teams are in the East. Does Iowa even finish in the top four if it was just one division like it used to be. That would be really questionable.

I am hopeful for Fran in the next three as he has showed continue improvement. As long as he keeps doing that I will be satisfied because eventually he will get us to a confeence title. If however we stay at fourth, fifth, or sixth place finishes and never exceed that is that good enough for everyone? It's an honest question.

If KF can build upon his the East conference championship and repeat it every few years and occasionally with the title then I am happy with that. If on the other hand we slip back into 6-6 or 7-5 seasons over and over again and get beat in bowl games then "no" I am not gonna omg this be satisfied with that. I am hoping his son can turn the offense around and make it fun to watch again. Watching GD's offense was brutal to endure as a fan.

Hey what's with the insults bud? Have I ever insulting you before or anyone be on this forum?

1. they don't play in the East, so who cares. It's dumb to say, it's dumb to think about. They beat 2 top 25 teams in 15 and also had a decent win against Pitt. That's fairly on par with most good teams resumes every season. They also beat Michigan last season. Don't act like it's all been smoke mirrors because it hasn't been. I get that there are tougher schedules in the country and tougher divisions, but let's not act like they beat nobody either ok? It's dumb to insinuate other wise and you just sound like a troll.

2. Fran isn't continually finishing in 4th, 5th or 6th. He just finished top 3 for 3 years in a row, then took a team full of freshman and sophmores that were picked by most to finish 10th or higher and got them to finish 5th and a game from making the dance.

3. If you expect Iowa to routinely win 10+ games like you're suggesting to be satisfied, I'm sorry, but 100's of years of history are working against you and your expectations. KF is going to leave Iowa as it's most winning coach in school history. Not excepting 6-6 or 7-5 seasons is unrealistic at every school in the country besides what maybe 5? That's ridiculous. It's dumb... and also - Iowa has finished better then 6-6 and 7-5 in 3 of the last 4 seasons - the outlier season? 7-5.

4. See the above, I am not trying to insult you, but you're saying really dumb things. I can't help that. I don't want to call you dumb, but really, what else can be said.

There is a huge window between jump up and down satisfied and pitchforks and torches pissed.

Exactly - I am not satisfied. I want more. In Football and Basketball. I never stop wanting more, but some of the stuff that gets thrown around on this site is pathetic, uninformed and straight up garbage and the only reason I come back every day is to put things like that on blast.

Seriously... read this^^^^^^ about the only true statement in it is that the coaches and AD's are rich.

Has anyone ever come out and said what their personal expectations our for the program??? I've never heard anyone say this is what I expect from our coaches, and this is what is what I would find unacceptable. Some people don't expect much. I just wonder what expectations you have at this point.

I would like to see the team win the west at least two out of every five years. I don't think that is asking too much considering who is in our division.

I know it's just a poll but with one of the best offensive lines in college football and MAYBE one of the best backfields in the conference I can't understand why some people are picking us to finish fourth in our division. Also given that KF is the senior most coach in the whole conference, that got my feathers ruffled up a bit. I know it is just a guessing game but what if for some crazy reason that happens? I cannot except that with the talent on this team. That got me to thinking about reasonable expectations. I think winning the division 2 out every 5 years in totally fair.

I heard posters complain a lot but does anyone just come out and say I find it totally acceptable if this is what the programs achieves?

Who said anything about pitchforks? The fourth place to ninth had to do with the basketball program on average since Alford was hired. Football hasn't been that bad. I have been giving my Props to Fran and am thinking it's looking good at this point. Three years from now we will know if the high expectations get met.

I actually expect a pretty good football season despite inexperince at the QB position and question marks with our receivers. I would find fourth place in our division hard to swallow. I am not expecting that and think we have a shot at winning it. Would be very disappointed and a little pissed off if the fourth place finish happens.

Now this post I am almost all in on because it's fair and reasonable. Hell yeah I expect better than a 4th place finish in FB. But I can't blame KF for what everyone else's expectations are. He didn't set them for people like Phil Steele and ESPN and I am positive he expects to finish a lot higher than that too. Iowa is being overlooked IMO and I was just pointing out that he finished better than your "6-6 or 7-5" every season rant in 3 out of the last 4 years, and just missed the mark the other year. The fact of it is, we're pretty damn consistent as a program if you take a look around and compare to what other schools have done over the last 19 years. There are some better yes, but his record likely puts him well in the top 25 for an average. Not bad IMO and there just aren't many programs that consistently exceed 8+ wins year in and year out in College Football. It's a single digit #.

I expect a better than 5th place finish in basketball too... I think most hoops fans expect top 5 for this team THIS season and expect them to contend (just like they did in 15) for a B1G basketball conference title.

I wouldn't say we contended for a conference title in 2015. Wisconsin ran away with it

Iowa was still in the mix with 3 weeks left in the season and ranked in the top 10 - I'd say we contended and then Wisci won it

Are you talking 2014-15 or 2015-16? Neither time we competed for a conference title. 14-15 Wisconsin went 16-2 and 2015-16 we ended up the 5 seed. The last time we competed for a conference title was 2006-06 when we finished a game behind Ohio $tate.

15-16 If you were in 1st place in mid February and with 6 games to go but ended up finishing 3rd you were in contention. Iowa blew it or came back to earth however you see it, you won't convince me they weren't in contention.

We finished 3 games out of first place and ended up getting the 5 seed in the conference tournament. I guess I won't agree with you that we contended because we were hot early on.

6 games left before their Feb 16th game at Penn State, Iowa was in first place and 22 days later finished tied for 3rd. It was a lil more of just a "hot early on" when you start the first 13 games 11-2. Iowa tanked, you'll get NO argument from me, but for the majority of the season Iowa was in contention and in 1st place. They ultimately lost, but were in contention up until the final weeks

Iowa played Indiana the second to last game of the year. If we win that game, we lose by one game. If Indiana won one more game after that, which I assume they did but can't remember for sure, it means with two games left we had a chance to tie. That's competing for a championship.
