Miller & Deace on Wisconsin Loss, Where Program is Heading

Great podcast......going for it on 4th down this year like we have.....was this because we did not have a great kicker or is this a philosopy change out of Kirk? I believe in the podcast it was mentioned we can some evidence of change this year. Would the 4th down situation be a part of this evidence?

It will be curious to see next year if we continue to go for it on 4th down like we did this year.

I loved that you spoke about Wiseman and hope the makes it over the wall because that needs to be heard. At the level Iowa is at it makes absolutely no sense how you have a FB in as your featured back and for it to go on for 3 years, now that is astonishing.. That right there convinces me that the game has passed KF by. How does he not see that?

The state of the program is that we were at home with the crowd going crazy and the offense finally putting up some fireworks in the 2nd half and we still couldn't beat an overrated (expect for Gordon) Wisconsin team. It tells me that our overall level of talent and the coaching of that talent has slipped considerably in the last few years.

Phil Parker is no Norm (I won't insult anyone by comparing GD to them) and Kirk is tired of it, he has no fire aside from the obligatory and staged screaming outburst he pulls out to show everyone he cares still. We used to turn mediocre recruits into great players. Now, we turn ok recruits into ok players.

I don't expect the bottom to fall out but rather a slow slide towards 2020. Kirk will leave this program exactly how he found it if we let him.

We're comfortably settling into a ceiling of 8 wins a year, counting the bowl game until Kurt moves on. We won't be ranked again until he leaves, as I've said many times before.

I was at the game Saturday and I couldn't help but think the Iowa fans deserve better than what we have gotten in recent history with this football program. As many have said several times, we have become an average at best program, but the stadium atmosphere this past Saturday, and other Saturdays I have attended are well above average in comparison to other places I have been. My biggest fear is that apathy will set in, and we won't get Saturdays like November 22 anymore. I have also been to some games that have felt like we are very close to that point.

It's another frustrating year of watching Iowa football underachieve. I don't think that Iowa's offensive line got the best coach available when they hired Brian Ferentz. And the offense didn't get the best offensive coordinator available when they got Greg Davis. The offensive line hasn't done a good job all year. A large part of it is the scheme. Another part is that Iowa's offensive line's are usually smaller than the contenders in the B1G. (Nb, Wi, OSU, Mi) While 300 pound defensive linemen are becoming more common in college football. You don't have a big line for the running backs, the best running backs go to the teams that do.
Dinking an dunking works between the 20's but a solid well coached offensive line is needed inside the 20s. With all of Iowa's talent at WR, Iowa's best passing QB sits on the bench. An 8 win season with this schedule is ridicules. So is getting blown out by Minnesota, losing to Iowa State and Maryland. While playing Wisconsin to a two point loss. The problems start in the head coaches office.

"why havn't you attacked all year long"? Easy...they tried - they tried ...they tried 1st 3 games...and again at Maryland. My beef early in the season was that they abandoned the run way too early.. And they did and they went to the pass.

I agree - in the final analysis - its recruiting - Iowa looks good when they can execute the plays...and the problem is that they don't have good enough players to execute well. Its too freeking hard to execute at a high level with MAC level talent.

This sums it up for me as well.

Really enjoyed this conversation, probably because I agreed with most, if not all, everything that was said. I hope others begin to have this type of discussion as well. They can adapt without selling their soul.

Jon,

Great, Great Podcast. I listen to every single 1 of your Podcasts with Deace and Wolfgang as I really enjoy this feature of your website. It passes the day in my cubicle also:). I have followed you very closely over the years by listening to podcasts, reading articles on your website or listening to KXNO and I can say that I completely agree with you right now except for the fact that you don't think that we need to fire Kirk. All of the stats that you have thrown out, say that we are nothing more than mediocre in football over the past 10 years. 1 great season and 1 good season in 2008 (when we actually started that year 5-4) shouldn't be enough to keep your job. 41-38 in Big 10 play since Tate to Holloway says it all to me. This program is paying elite money for average. But then again, I don't believe for 1 second that the University of Iowa will ever make the right decisions when it comes to football and basketball. Our athletic programs have been average for years and years and frankly it is getting harder and harder to continue to throw out hard earned money to go to the games.

I have been a season ticket holder since 2002. I have attended 87 consecutive home games but I will not be at the Nebraska/Iowa game. This game means nothing. Typically I would say 8-4 seasons are good years at Iowa but when you play in arguably the easier conference in America with the easiest schedule in 30+ years and losing to Iowa State at Home and needing a miracle finish to beat Ball State, 8-4 is UNACCEPTABLE. I will not be renewing my season tickets next year either as the home schedule is pathetic. I actually had 2 extra tickets for the Iowa/Wisconsin game that I was trying to sell and was offering the tickets for $5 and there were no takers. If I want to go to the games, I can scalp tickets for a whole lot cheaper. I am assuming thousands of other Hawkeye fans are thinking of the same thing next year looking at that schedule. But the University of Iowa can't even see this coming.

Voting with your pocketbook is probably one of the most effective ways for the average fan to make a difference. I'm not there, but I can't criticize others who feel, and act, that way. I think it will be more noticeable next year (and it is was noticeable this year). There's no buzz around the program, so it will get harder and harder to get fans away from their 60" HDTVs.

I think looking back the decision the staff made 2 or 3 years ago to take some schollies away from potential O-line recruits and use those to beef up the receiving corp was a HUGE mistake. When GD showed up, he noted the lack of speed on the outside, so they over-corrected and handed out WR schollies like candy and decided to go cheap on the o-line. Lets look at that surplus of WRs from the '13 class - AJ Jones (gone), Derrick Willies (gone for now), Damond Powell (a few snaps per game), Derrick Mitchell (burried on depth chart), Andre Harris (burried on depth chart). (oh, and the only WR to see significant playing time from that class was a grayshirt). Who knows if these WR's are either busts, OR are just products of a system that doesn't cater to talented WR's.

I know BF takes a lot of heat for the lack of line production, but look at what he's got to work with. They've got 3 good (1 outstanding of course) lineman, and that's it. Zero depth currently for this line.

The problems run deeper than this, however I just keep looking at that WR class and think we wasted potential O-line scholarships on this?

Stunning Stat

11-21 against teams > .500 || 5 of those 11 wins against teams finishing 7-6

Without any context, I can't call it stunning. Across football, the average record against teams who finish over .500 is going to be under .500, its a tautology. How does Iowa rank compared to other teams? Obviously, its not great. But its probably about what you should expect for our overall record in that timespan.

See, that's just it..Iowa's overall performance during that timespan is below what should be reasonably acceptable...and it's another reinforcement of the era of average

Those players were redshirt freshmen this year. I didn't expect them to make much of an impact at either OL or WR. Willies probably could have been a solid contributor if he saw the field more. RSFR OL are unlikely to have contributed in any way this year.

The reduced depth at OL may hurt them next year, but the influx of WR talent may happen next year.

Chopping up the win/losses in different ways and complaining about it is pointless. Go ahead and focus on the overall performance, which has been unimpressive.

I think it has had an impact this year. With regards to WR's, skill position athletes in this era of football can make a impact from day 1. You see true Freshman WR's and RB's all over the country getting an opportunity. The lone freshman from that class to play last year was the greyshirt. As for the oline, Sean Welsh and Ike Boettger (recruited as a TE by the way) were both on the depth chart this year, with one of them starting. I believe Iowa could have benefited from having at least 1 or 2 more signings from that class.

Again, I think this is just one of the many issues here, but it's worth noting.
